Unlock the power of big data and generate scientific insights.
As technology continues to advance and our world becomes more digitally connected, our ability to capture and store significant amounts of data continues to grow.
Through your data science studies you’ll gain the skills to analyse, manipulate, model and interpret large data sets to uncover patterns and generate valuable insights.
Study data science at Griffith
Griffith is the first university in South East Queensland to offer data science as an undergraduate degree. In your studies you’ll develop a broad and coherent body of knowledge in the exploration, gathering, manipulation, visualisation, automation and interpretation of large data sets using digital platforms. With hands-on experience across common data science tools, including Python, Tableau, Hadoop and SQL, you’ll gain unique skills that employers want.
Data science can be undertaken as a major in the Bachelor of Computer Science or a double degree with the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Environmental Science. By undertaking a double degree with data science you will broaden your career options and develop a specialised skillset that can be applied to your chosen major of study.
In the final year of your degree, you will complete a practical project for industry or research placement providing you with first-hand experience of the knowledge, skills and attributes required to succeed in full-time employment.
Bachelor of Computer Science graduate
With a major in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Leon never fails to feel excitement when drawing hidden conclusions from real data in Griffith's state-of-the-art facilities. 'Running finished code for the first time without error is a great feeling,' he says. Recognition within the School of ICT for his contributions to many research projects has put Leon on the path towards his dream career as a data scientist. 'Do not hesitate to speak to your lecturers and tutors and gradually increase your involvement within Griffith, as it will help you network and apply your knowledge in your future roles.'
The demand for data science professionals is growing
Data science is highly applicable to various fields including environmental studies, biomedical sciences, cyber security, engineering, health care, business, economics, finance, marketing and many more. As a qualified data scientist you will find career opportunities across research, government, non-government agencies and industry.
The demand for data science professionals is growing with a forecast for annual growth of 2.4% over the next 5 years, outpacing the 1.5% annual growth for the Australian labour force*.* The future of work: Occupational and education trends in data science in Australia.
