Work at the forefront of medical research

Biomedical science helps society through applying new scientific knowledge to medicine and healthcare. Pursuing this vibrant, relevant and topical area of study, you'll be opening a variety of career pathways.

Biomedical science is the foundation for modern medicine and during your studies you'll gain an understanding of the methods used for diagnosing and treating disease. You'll be equipped with comprehensive knowledge and skills in the fundamental sciences relevant to modern medicine such as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology and physiology, as well as more medical and clinically-oriented areas such as anatomy, clinical pathology, immunology, infectious disease, neuroscience and pharmacology.

In addition to classroom-based learning, you'll be provided with extensive hands-on, laboratory-based training which will equip you with highly sought after skills when entering the workforce.

Priority access for rural students

Be part of the next generation of healthcare professionals who understand the issues facing rural communities. Commonwealth supported places are set aside for rural students in medicine, medical science and dentistry.

Study biomedical science and medical science at Griffith

Educating and training tomorrow's scientists, educators and health professionals

Griffith has an impressive reputation in the biomedical sciences. Australia's first Bachelor of Biomedical Science was designed and taught at our Nathan campus in 1991 as a specialist pre-medical degree. Based on more than two decades of expertise in designing programs and teaching in the biomedical sciences, our flexible suite of degrees delivers proven pathways to graduate medicine, biomedical research, the allied health professions and a wide range of other careers including medical diagnostics.

As a Griffith biomedical graduate, your core knowledge and work-ready practical skills will be highly regarded, throughout Australia and internationally by medical schools, hospitals, allied health professions, medical research institutes, government research organisations, pathology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

You'll learn from internationally recognised teachers and researchers, leaders in their field who are approachable, enthusiastic educators. You'll benefit from a personalised approach that puts the emphasis on developing your knowledge and skills for academic and professional success.

You'll have opportunities to take part in research projects and professional development activities in world-class environments.

You'll also have the advantage of peer mentoring programs and student and staff social networks, helping you develop as a valued member of the Griffith biomedical community.

2019 Outstanding Alumnus Award Winner: Dr Barry Kirby

Dr Barry Kirby AO was 40 years old and working as a carpenter in Papua New Guinea (PNG) when he witnessed a traumatic incident that resulted in the death of a woman in labour. It changed the course of his career. In that moment he decided PNG needed doctors more than carpenters. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Griffith University, which set him on the path to becoming a doctor. Now, he’s a rural GP in PNG, dedicated to saving women’s lives.

Etelini Roberts

Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Bachelor of Biomedical Science student Etelini Roberts is aiming to fulfil her dream of becoming a doctor and is happy that she has begun her career pathway at Griffith. Now in the second year of her degree, Etelini, who is thinking about a career in paediatrics, is aiming to convert to the Doctor of Medicine by next year. ‘At the moment, I am really loving the Biomedical Science program as it is so hands-on and immersive in the anatomy environment. I am a very visual person in my learning style, so it’s great that we have so much practical experience which helps in really embedding the information. The lecturers at Griffith are really helpful and patient in explaining things too.’
