Industrial Design brings engineering and design together, combining engineering principles, creative thinking, digital media and digital manufacturing. You'll develop advanced 3D computer modelling skills and will use advanced technologies, including 3D printing, right from your first year of study.
Study industrial design at Griffith
In this degree, you will combine a creative engineering approach with industrial design innovation. You will graduate with a unique ability for innovation and creativity in Industrial Design whilst working within the principles of engineering. You will learn through project based design studios and technical learning studios, as the degree takes a hands-on approach to teaching that uses advanced technologies such as 3D printing. You will also experience traditional engineering learning to give you the chance to develop both your engineering knowledge and professional practice and your design skills and bring them together for project work wherever practical throughout the degree.
You will learn about design process, material characteristics, mechanics and electronics as well as 3D computer modelling, creative thinking and digital media. This degree also incorporates an international focus on digital and advanced technology manufacturing, giving you the chance to develop an understanding of how a product is created, from design to delivery, in a global context.
This degree provides a pathway to accreditation into Engineers Australia (on completion of an additional two years of study) or into design and technology teacher training.
The Bachelor of Industrial Design is recognised by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA). Students and graduates of the courses are automatically eligible to be DIA members.

The interdisciplinary nature of industrial design strongly appealed to Ashley, as it allowed her to work across art and engineering. “My favourite thing about the university is collaboration – I spend a lot of time with academics in different fields, and I learn so much from them,” she said. “Everyone is willing to help you if you want to learn.' Ashley has represented Griffith at industrial design competitions, is part of the Women In STEM team, and designed the 3D-printed trophy that’s presented to the university’s Outstanding Alumni each year.

With a graduate portfolio demonstrating your creative knowledge, commitment and skill, the Bachelor of Industrial Design degree generates a multitude of opportunities in a wide range of global industry careers including: industrial designer, innovator, product designer, entrepreneur, creative designer-maker, medical applications designer, automotive designer and digital fashion designer.
