Australia's most highly recognised Aviation program

Griffith works closely with industry to develop degrees to meet the needs of business now and into the future. We have strong links with the major airlines and are world leaders in aviation research. Our Aviation Industry Advisory board ensures that our degrees include knowledge and skills that are up-to-date and in-demand by industry.

Pilot training

Our Bachelor of Aviation combined with our Graduate Diploma of Flight Management provides the qualifications and flight training required to become a commercial pilot. This is offered through our contracted flight training provider Basair, Australia’s largest flying school. Our graduates go on to work for regional, national and international carriers.

Double degree options

You can choose to combine your aviation degree with a Bachelor of Information Technology or a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours). With an aviation double degree, you’ll graduate with two clear career pathways and a unique skill set that will set you apart in the aviation industry.

Flight Procedures Lab

From 2021 students will be able to experience a new Flight Procedures Lab in our Engineering, Technology and Aviation Building. The lab will include state-of-the-art, personal computer-based flight training devices with virtual reality capacity. Fitted with 40 stations, the flight simulators will comprise of next-generation gaming computers, VR headsets, Honeycomb Alpha Flight Controls and X-plane 11.

Networking opportunities

Build your professional network with our Mentoring Aviators Through Educational Support (MATES) program. MATES is open to our undergraduate aviation students, providing professional development and peer mentoring opportunities in a social environment. You’ll hear from guest speakers across various aviation professions and gain practical insights into the industry.

Professional Entry pathway

If you have existing experience and/or qualifications in that aviation industry you may be eligible for the Professional Entry pathway into the Bachelor of Aviation or Bachelor of Aviation Management. Your experience is acknowledged allowing you to finish the degree faster.

Qantas Future Pilot Program

The Qantas Group Future Pilot Program (QFPP) is open to eligible aviation students at Griffith University.

The program provides aviation students with access to experienced pilots during their degree, a talent development program and selected students will be invited to complete an airline pathway program (subject to operational requirements*).

Successful graduates will transition to employment with QantasLink where they will complete their training under the supervision of QantasLink’s experienced training team and become qualified as First Officers flying the airline’s Dash 8 200/300 or Q400 fleet.

To be eligible to be considered for the program, students need to hold a GPA of 5.0 or above for the duration of their studies, and Australian work rights.

Qantas group pilot academy

In partnership with the Qantas Group Pilot Academy and Griffith University, aviation students have a preferential pathway to complete their practical aviation training at the Academy.

The Qantas Group Pilot Academy is committed to providing a high standard of training delivered in an inclusive and supportive environment. The goal of the academy is to produce industry-ready pilots with a strong focus on safety. Training is facilitated by Flight Training Adelaide (FTA) with support from the Qantas Group to provide an outstanding student experience.

Over 52 weeks a student will complete their Commercial Pilot Licence, Multi-engine Instrument Rating, ATPL theory subjects and Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) course to complement their Griffith University aviation degree.

Career outcomes

The Bachelor of Aviation together with the Graduate Diploma of Flight Management will allow graduates to be ready to work in the aviation industry as a commercial pilot. Graduates of these programs will find employment opportunities in charter work, regional airlines, flight instruction (theory and practical), aerial services (agricultural spraying, aerial surveying and photography), management, research and human resource management, and in government organisations such as Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Defence Force (in first officer positions)
