Ongoing counselling via your fingertips

Counselling Messaging gives you access to ongoing support quickly and conveniently. It is suitable if you are seeking counselling help, have questions about your mental health or simply, just feel like you need to talk to someone. We understand that some students need ongoing support, so there is no limit to the number of times you can use this service throughout the year. It can provide you with support and assistance to feel better, perform better academically and thrive in your life and university degree. It is a responsive and flexible medium, so you can get support without making an appointment.

Does Counselling Messaging suit you?

We know students sometimes need ongoing counselling support or they may have particular questions relating to their own mental health, situation or struggles. You may also feel like you want to discuss your situation with a counsellor without making an in-person appointment. Counselling Messaging provides this as it is a confidential, flexible and responsive service that can offer you help sooner without making an appointment.

If you are already connected to our other support services, such as Email Counselling Exchanges (ECE) or seeing a counsellor at our service, please do not use CM until you are finished with your in-person counselling or ECE.

Please note that CM is not suitable if you need more intensive or urgent support, such as having suicidal thoughts or enduring mental health difficulties. If so, please get in touch with us so we can find a more suitable way to support you.

Responsive and flexible

Having access to Counselling Messaging means you can message a counsellor anytime it suits you, sometimes frequently, sometimes less frequently. Some students who use this service contact us only during stressful periods, while others are in contact more regularly.

Over time, your circumstances can change and you may feel you need more urgent or intensive support. If so, you can let us know via text or call Student Services to make an in-person appointment. We can then arrange more appropriate support for your needs. Also take note of our crisis support options and after-hours crisis lines found here. Your wellbeing is important to us, and we would like to help you the best we can.

Secure, confidential and private

Your privacy and confidentiality is very important to us. We only allow counselling messaging using the Wire app. Wire is a free, simple and fast encrypted messaging app, regarded as the most secure app by using complete end-to-end encryption. This means that the privacy of our counselling conversations is absolutely guaranteed. It is user-friendly and downloading the app only takes a few minutes. It is available on iOS, Android and as a web version.

To ensure your privacy and confidentiality, we only allow counselling conversations to occur using messages exchanged on the Wire app.

Duration

A student can have unlimited counselling messages exchanges once they are registered and connected. You have access to the service throughout the calendar year. However, due to unforeseen circumstances the service may be closed for periods at a time. The counsellor will use maximum two business days (notwithstanding unforeseen circumstances) to respond to your message, however they will usually respond sooner. If your circumstances change or worsen, we may suggest that you use some of our other services, such as in-person sessions, video counselling or email counselling exchanges.

Documentation

There may be times when personal difficulties impact negatively on your academic performance. Due to this, you may need to apply for flexible arrangements such as extensions, deferred examinations, special consideration, withdrawal due to special circumstances or a leave of absence. The role of the counselling and wellbeing service is to provide counselling, and documentation may only be provided at the counsellor's discretion.

Confidentiality

We maintain confidentiality and will not disclose anything to anybody about you unless you ask us to do so, give permission to do so, we are required by law or there are compelling reasons such as significant risk to you or someone else. We keep confidential documents securely for the required number of years after your last contact with us. Your counselling messages will only be handled by your counsellor and kept securely and privately on our data system. Our data system is separate and independent from the Griffith University student data system.

Evaluation

Your progress using counselling messages is evaluated by asking you to complete a brief questionnaire every two weeks that you have used the service. Your responses are anonymous and confidential. We do this to ensure our service is helping you and other students. If you feel it is not helping, please let us know so we can find other options that are more suitable to help you feel better.

How to use Counselling Messaging

Write in detail

Use long messages rather than short ones. In order for your counsellor to give more detailed ways of how things can improve for you, it is important for them to have all the information. Try to give detailed and considered responses to questions and when you are telling your story. This way the help and support is more tailored so you get feel better sooner.

Response time

We usually respond to messages every other day, however our maximum response time is four business days (notwithstanding unforeseen circumstances). We do not respond to messages during evenings, weekends or public holidays. In order for you to receive the best tailored counselling we can give you using messaging, we set aside time during the day to give our conversations the full attention they need and deserves. Be patient—we will help. Please use our crisis after-hours support line if you feel you need more urgent support.
