GC2018 - It's a wrap

As an Official Partner of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, Griffith University created remarkable opportunities for our students, staff and community. We’re proud to have played a role in the most significant event in Australia this decade.

500+ students

More than 500 students, alumni and staff contributed to the Games and Griffith’s community engagement activities as volunteers, secondees, interns.

12,000+ visitors

More than 12,000 visitors experienced Griffith’s innovation at our showcase activations at the Optus Aquatic Centre, Broadbeach.

Creative Arts Partnership

We contributed to Festival 2018 as the Creative Arts Partner. Activities included:

  • A team of students and graduates designed the GC2018 sub-brand logos
  • High profile alumni including Dami Im performed as part of Festival 2018
  • Griffith architecture students built a model of Carrara Stadium that was used to plan the Opening Ceremony.

Marathon Partnership

As Presenting Partner of the GC2018 Marathon, we showcased the best of the Gold Coast cityscape to more than 30,000 spectators. Griffith alumnus Michael Shelley won Gold in the Men’s Marathon, and student Madison de Rozario won Gold in the Women’s T54 (Wheelchair) Marathon.

Queen’s Baton Relay

More than 2,000 visitors witnessed our Queen’s Baton Relay celebrations at Nathan and the Gold Coast campuses, and Griffith staff, students and graduates were honoured as GC2018 baton bearers, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to research, education and their communities.

Team Griffith

Griffith had the most athletes of any Australian university competing at GC2018. Griffith’s reputation as one of Australia’s top universities for elite athletes was reinforced at GC2018, with a contingent of 40 Griffith athletes competing at the Games.
