GC2018 and Griffith University
We are an Official Partner of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) and are the first University in history to partner with a Commonwealth Games.
This world-first partnership offers our students, staff and graduates the chance to be closely involved in the lead-up to and delivery of the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade.
Our students have and continue to enjoy unique learning experiences, with approximately 250* internships available with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Corporation (GOLDOC) and additional placements with the Games Delivery Partners in the lead-up and during GC2018 across a variety of study areas. Many courses will also include GC2018-related material embedded in the study content.
Scholarships are available for students from Commonwealth nations and territories including Australia, who wish to study sport or a sport related field. The Sporting Excellence Scholarships are available to elite athletes. These scholarships include full tuition, accommodation and assistance with other educational expenses.
Our staff from across the university will lend their expertise through secondment positions, consulting engagements and research with GOLDOC and the Games Delivery Partners.More information on how our staff can be involved.
Griffith University's facilities will be used by visiting athletes and officials in the lead-up to and during the GC2018.
Many of our students and staff have applied for volunteering roles in a way to be involved and give back to the community and play their part in GC2018.
Creative Arts Partner
The Creative Arts Partner for GC2018 and will have the opportunity to contribute to the creative arts program, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, artwork and other cultural programs and to leave a lasting legacy.
Marathon Presenting Partner
The Presenting Partner of the GC2018 Marathon, with the 42km course set to showcase the best of the Gold Coast cityscape, where we will celebrate our commitment to the city.
Queen's Baton Relay
We will also play a special part in the Queen's Baton Relay celebrations.
This partnership builds on our long association with the Commonwealth Games. During the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games, our Nathan campus was home to the Athlete's Village. At GC2018, our Gold Coast campus will be situated opposite the new Commonwealth Games Village.
GC2018 is more than a celebration of sport - it's a showcase of health, technology, infrastructure, media, culture and planning that will leave a lasting legacy for our staff, students and the wider Gold Coast community.

Legacy - The GC2018 Partnership into the future
The Commonwealth Games Village is located in the centre of the Gold Coast's Health and Knowledge Precinct - an innovative development between Griffith University, Gold Coast University Hospital and the City of Gold Coast. Once the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has concluded, the Commonwealth Games Village will become a part of the precinct providing residential accommodation, a business hub - where research and enterprise can work together - and incubator facilities to nurture research, knowledge and continued business development on the Gold Coast.
Stage two of the Light Rail extension is due for completion in time for GC2018 and will connect Griffith University to the Northern Gold Coast and heavy rail network to Helensvale, making our campus more accessible.
Knowledge and Research
Specific GC2018 learning material will be embedded in course content across a range of degree programs, engaging students in the history, impact and future of the Commonwealth Games event and leaving a legacy of knowledge and understanding in our students.
A total of seven Griffith University and GC2018, and Griffith University GC2018 Sporting Excellence Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding students from across the Commonwealth. These students will make a positive contribution to the university and the community now and into the future. Griffith University GC2018 Sporting Excellence Scholarships are available for elite athletes who wish to further their studies while making a contribution to the university, sport in Australia and their home nation.
GC2018 will also provide opportunities for research and collaboration across multiple focus areas, furthering our knowledge and understanding of the impact of multi-sport mega-events on the people, places and environments involved.
Griffith University has a long history of involvement with the Commonwealth Games in Australia. Our Nathan campus was the location for the Games Village at the 1982 Commonwealth games, which began our close association with this global, multi-sport event.
Now Griffith University and the Commonwealth Games have come together again in a new and exciting Official Partnership that is providing unique opportunities for staff, students, graduates and the wider community to be involved with the biggest sporting event in Australia this decade.
