ERA evaluation is handled by Research Evaluation Committees

ARC nominate a Research Evaluation Committee for each discipline cluster to undertake expert review of each university's submission for that discipline. They rate the research excellence for each Field of Research where a university has reached the publication volume threshold.

Publication volume thresholds

The publication volume thresholds for ERA 2018 are:

  • 50 indexed journal articles for disciplines where citation analysis is used
  • 50 weighted research outputs for disciplines where peer review is used

The Research Evaluation Committees comprise leading researchers with appropriate discipline expertise as well as expertise in research evaluation. The Research Evaluation Committees for the 2018 ERA exercise can be found on the ARC website.

ERA citation analysis and peer review

ERA Research Evaluation Committees assess the quality of research outputs in each Field of Research based on either citation analysis or peer review.

ERA 2018 Discipline Matrix

Citation analysis

Citation analysis is used as an indicator in Fields of Research where at least half of the total output of the discipline (including research outputs other than journal articles) is indexed by the citation information provider. The citation information provider for ERA 2018 is Clarivate Analytics.

Peer review

Peer review is used for ERA disciplines where citation analysis is not considered to be a robust indicator. Griffith nominates academic advisers from each Group to choose a proportion of best quality research outputs to be evaluated by the Research Evaluation Committees. A short research statement must accompany any creative work nominated for peer review.

Rating system

Each of the two and four-digit Fields of Research assessed is assigned a rating by the Research Evaluation Committee. Ratings are:

RatingDescription
5The Unit of Evaluation profile is characterised by evidence of outstanding performance well above world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation.
4The Unit of Evaluation profile is characterised by evidence of performance above world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation.
3The Unit of Evaluation profile is characterised by evidence of  average performance at world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation.
2The Unit of Evaluation profile is characterised by evidence of performance below world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation.
1The Unit of Evaluation profile is characterised by evidence of performance well below world standard presented by the suite of indicators used for evaluation.
N/ANot assessed due to low volume. The number of research outputs does not meet the volume threshold standard for evaluation in ERA.
