Data collection for compliance

The University is required to collect certain statistical information on higher degree research students. The information must be categorised according to a number of codes provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The following statistical information is collected during the application process

Field of Education Codes

These codes describe higher education courses, specialisations and units of study. The main purpose of the classification is to ensure courses, specialisations and units of study (i.e. subjects) with the same or similar vocational emphasis are reliably classified to the same "field of education".

Research Classification Codes

27/03/2009 Note: Additional Datacubes have been released to provide users with correspondence tables which can be used to compare data collected using the Australian New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) with that collected using the OECD's Fields of Science and Technology (FOS) 2007 classification and Eurostat's Nomenclature for the Analysis and Comparison of Scientific Programmes and Budgets (NABS) 2007 classification.

The new Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) was introduced by the ABS in 2008 to replace the Australian Standard Research Classification (ASRC 1998). ANZSRC is the collective name for a set of related classifications developed for use in the measurement and analysis of research and experimental development (R&D) undertaken in Australia and New Zealand. The full ABS documentation can be found here.
