GOVS, the solo brainchild of Josiah Birrell, is the purveyor of gentle tunes, beauteous and charming in both arrangement and performance. I've Never Seen a Ghost is the first single from his debut EP due out February – with writing, performing, recording and production all self-directed. GOVS has since seen rotation on Triple J with his first single, giving his second release Merseybeat much anticipation.
Jared Porter Band
The Jared Porter Band has a unique modern country sound, consisting of five members who all contribute their own flavor to the band. Jared's family roots are in Tennessee and so is his love for music as displayed through his songs and vocals. Each member of the Jared Porter Band have a unique but familiar tone, with astounding three-part vocal and instrumental harmonies, and a rock-solid rhythm section. It is without doubt that when they come together to form this unforgettable country rock band, that they will generate a response of pure enjoyment and awe in listeners both young and old.
Electrik lemondade is a collective united by the cosmic groove continuum, playing live shows featuring a repertoire of original energetic funk rock tunes, infused with electronic, soul, hip-hop and blues elements. Drawing on a unique blend of influences and combining their comedic, fun attitude toward life with a visually and sonically immersive music show, the crowd is never left with anything but a pure, funky feeling. Since releasing their debut EP Recombobulated in mid 2011 and winning LoudFest '11, they have been awarded with an Australian Live Music Award and are now set to tour the East Coast this year.
For Gold Coast-based singer/songwriter Marcus Blacke, the writing is foremost; copious amounts of ink and the human condition create songs that are lyrically impressive. With intricately plucked, southern-style folk guitar and possessing a voice that resembles some of the old folk greats, raw and dirty with the grit of society, it appears the man has something to get off his chest. Blacke's debut album Butterfly Black, produced by Aria award-winning producer/engineer Govinda Doyle and released digitally in 2012, received airplay Australia-wide.
Timber Bones' captivates his audience with the ability to paint a story. His beautifully vulnerable lyrics, paired with his emotionally rich and intense vocals make it hard to believe that Timber Bones (aka Luke Pauley) is just an emerging artist. In 2012, only 3 short months after playing guitar and singing, he was accepted into Queensland Conservatorium. Astounding audiences with his ever developing musical style, it is still shocking to think that he has only been writing and performing for just over a year.
Sneeky Picnic has created a complete new style and genre of music, labelling themselves as a 'New Pop Rap' band. Their music consists of catchy melodies and chord progressions, fast flowing rapping and intense drumming. They are lead by Jess Koroi, rapping, with Erin Ross on vocals, Tayla Hudson on the piano, Kathryn Bermingham on the bass guitar and Steph McIntyre on the drums. Sneeky Picnic have already made a large name for themselves in the local music scene in a short period of time, including playing at the 2013 Big Day Out. Their live performances are something to be seen with the girls having an incredible stage presence and flow of energy.
Dave's Pawn Shop
Dave's Pawn Shop is a crowded yet ambient garage, an atmospheric mashup of the new and the vintage. Jake, James and Jon are the guys behind the instruments, but don't let the idea of a trio fool you. Their 3-piece setup belies their magnetic stage presence and seriously large sound. Their live shows crackle with the passion, freedom and unrestricted expression every great band needs. They have played the Gold Coast Big Day Out and recently finished touring. Their EP I'm a horse has had airplay in Australia and America and they are now finishing off their next EP Enemy for a May 2013 release.
Her seamless fusion of folk and pop has seen Liza-Jane rising quickly throughout the ranks of the South-East Queensland music scene. Liza-Jane connects with listeners through raw, heart-felt song. Her lyrics unveil an unassuming honesty and whilst her songs have often been described as poetic and minimalistic, her infectious hooks and colourful melodies are sure to leave you wanting more of this up and coming songstress. Liza-Jane is due to release her debut EP A Long Winter in early 2013.
Through the influence of the New South Electronic music scene, deep in the luscious forest of the Northern Rivers, spawned the melodic movements and booming basslines of Rhettro, Rhett Grantham-Smith. With an early influence of classical piano and early psychadelia interests, Rhettro infuses progressive style repetition with self sample sounds and melodic lines to induce deep dance vibes. Rhett Grantham-Smith explores deep into the reaches of space and sound to search for the point that combines bassline funk, with a trippy technological touch.
Christian Perez ft Ashley Dean
Christian Perez is an aspiring pianist, composer and songwriter who has been performing since the age of six. Having grown up with a formal classical background, he is self taught in jazz and popular music which reflects in his original works. He describes his music as ambient jazz music infused with the dissonance and smoothness of blue-eyed soul. At the same time, he also writes music in the forms of classical, electronic dance music, RnB and pop. His solo piano instrumental project is due for release this year.
Jails and Churches
Jails and Churches is an experimental band that promotes free expression and human enlightenment. Formed by Luke Fox (Sunk Loto) and Sean Van Gennip (Sunk Loto), they have been joined Australian drumming veteran Dave Atkins (Wolf Mother, Resin Dogs, Pangaea), with Jon Stockman (Karnivool) as multi instrumentalist and Jarrod McAuley (Vaudeville) as guitarist. The band is currently producing and recording their debut album and will be announcing tour dates shortly.
James Diamond (Featuring Mado)
Take a guitar and throw it in a mixing bowl. Add a pinch of blues, a dash of funk, a spoonful of classic and a large punch of flamenco. Stir vigorously into a colourful display of original music and you have the recipe for a performance by James Diamond. James Diamond's guitar performances have been captivating audiences for the last thirteen years. He is hailed as an exceptional stage presence and a guitarist of outstanding talent by his musical peers. His show has been a crowd favourite in many large venues and he has supported and played with some of the largest names in the industry including Marcia Hines, Brian Cadd, Jose Feliciano, Rene Geyer, George Benson, Human Nature and Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Lady Grey (Leah Tharlai)
Leah Tharlai discovered her love for songwriting through a career as a vocalist in various bands around Brisbane. After nearly six years of honing her craft as a singer/songwriter/guitarist who also dabbled in percussion, she joined Queensland Conservatorium and built on those skills. Working closely with fellow musicians on the collaborative process and finding out what makes music really speak, Leah is now preparing for the release of her EP under the name Lady Grey, collaborating with animators and stop motion artists for a new clip to be released before the self-titled EP.
Opus Of A Machine
Opus of a Machine begun life as a studio-based project in 2010. Since then it has been pushing the creative boundaries of alternative, progressive rock. A self-produced effort, their debut album Simulacra is a diverse mixture of energetic hard rock and progressive grandeur. With a large plethora of musical heroes, Opus of a Machine blends technical proficiency and raw emotion, bridging the gap between the two. The first single, Parallels displays the more pop-orientated, hard-hitting side of Opus of a Machine, melding mechanical and electronic aesthetics with dense and introspective hard-rock orchestration.
Nothing short of captivating, Shaunyl Benson's folky, poetic songs and dreamy vocals deliver uniqueness and simplicity, with her live performances bringing audiences to a stand still. Shaunyl is currently writing and recording with producers in the United States for her new EP So he quit anticipated to be independently released in 2013. The EP features her maturing folk style and collaborative production with some of Queensland's well-known local folk artists. Her single from the EP The Hills with her unique style of melodic folk, has already shown popularity with audiences all around the world.
