2018 Vice Chancellor's Award for Griffith University Teacher of the Year

One of the highlights of the Celebrating Teaching events this year was the announcement of the Vice Chancellor's 2018 Griffith University Teacher of the Year – Dr Taeko Imura from the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science. The Griffith University Teacher of the Year is awarded to the most outstanding recipient of the winners of the Group Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Dr Taeko Imura

School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science

Dr Imura has been teaching Japanese language at Griffith University for 23 years, coordinating the Japanese language program and convening and teaching all Japanese language courses from first year to honours level. Taeko is a leading scholar of learning and teaching in her discipline, having secured eight funded projects, including most recently a 2018 New Columbo Plan Mobility grant.

Taeko uses a variety of innovative learning technologies and active learning strategies to meet the unique needs of her cohorts. These approaches also have a transformative effect on their language learning. Taeko promotes mobility initiatives and organises career events which enable her students to reach their highest proficiency in Japanese, enhance their career opportunities and deepen their engagement with the Asia‐Pacific region.

2018 Vice Chancellor's Commendation

Dr Vinod Gopalan

School of Medical Science and School of Medicine

This year a Vice Chancellor’s Commendation was also awarded in recognition of the outstanding achievements of Dr Vinod Gopalan from the School of Medical Science and School of Medicine.

Dr Vinod Gopalan is a global scholar in his field and has created learning experiences for his students that are authentic, industry informed and valued by employers of his medical laboratory science graduates.

Griffith Awards for Excellence in Teaching

The Griffith Awards for Excellence in Teaching recognise and reward engaged teachers who are passionate about their discipline. These teachers are at the cutting edge of their field, have a comprehensive and expanding knowledge base, demonstrate outstanding professional expertise and skills in teaching and are enthusiastic about helping students learn.
