Min Jun Kim from Korea talks about his experience in completing the Community Internship Program at Griffith University.
“My name’s Min. I’m Korean. I am currently studying in Australia. Studying a Master of Commerce majoring in Applied Finance at Griffith University.
When I first arrived in Australia I did have some difficulty in understanding the culture. Griffith University offers international students a lot of support though. The International Student Advisors can give you advice on cultural issues and will help you with adapting to the Australian culture.
I really appreciate how flexible Griffith University has been with my study options. I was recently given the opportunity to participate in the Community Internship program. The Community Internship program has provided me with huge opportunities to be able to develop my professional skills such as interpersonal skills, leadership and how to delegate tasks to other team members. The Community Internship program is awesome because you can get free-elective credit for your studies.
I volunteered in a marketing and PR role for the Logan Community Financial Services, an organisation that is committed to continued involvement with local organisations, sporting groups and businesses. They provide the community with banking services and give 80% of their profits back to the community.
I was involved in the planning and coordination of a community event called the ‘Big Day out for people with disabilities’. I was responsible for liaising with community and professional sporting organisations. I wrote press releases, organised advertising and even did some graphic design work. I gained hands-on experience at the Logan Community Financial Services. I broadened my professional network and also gained skills such as leadership skills. Most importantly now I have a better understanding of the issues of people with disabilities in the community.
I like that I am making a difference to the community through my work.
At Griffith University you will be able to get an excellent education and also you can utilise the knowledge you gained through university to influence and also make positive lifelong contributions to your community.
Know more. Do more. Griffith University. Queensland, Australia.”
