Living expensesAustralian living expenses are considerably higher than most of the countries that our students come from. Before you arrive, it is a good idea do you research and get familiar with the local costs so that you can budget appropriately.
Depending on where you live, housing will most likely incur the biggest expense. You can expect to pay between AUD 150 - 200 per week for rent, electricity, internet, water, and gas. This estimate is highly dependant on your lifestyle and standard of living. The second biggest expense students face is food. To get an idea of what to expect, you can visit the online stores of Coles and Woolworths, the two largest grocery store chains in Australia.
Visit the Cost of studying in Australia page for an idea of what to expect each week.
Opening a bank account
If you plan on receiving funds outside of Australia or are looking for employment, it is recommended that you open an Australian bank account. Griffith University partners with ANZ, one of four major Australian banks. Other popular banks are:
When you arrive, you should visit the different banks to discuss the possibility of opening an account. It is a good idea to look at a few banks before you make your decision as they will have different fees and requirements. Be sure to take as many forms of ID as you can including your passport, Griffith ID card, foreign driver's license, and proof of Australian address. Note: Our office cannot provide a letter as proof of address.
Tips for saving
Most students will develop their own budgeting tips as they go along, but to get you started here are some of ours:
- do your research - It is important to consider all the financial implications involved in any decision you make. For example, the rental cost of an apartment far from campus might result in higher transportation costs.
- cook at home - Making your own meals is considerably much cheaper than eating out or ordering takeaway. If you live with housemates, bulk-buying and cooking in large quantities can further reduce the cost.
- use your student ID - A lot of social places such as the cinemas and night clubs offer discounts for students. Also, be sure to get a student go card if you plan on using public transport! These can be purchased on campus.
