More than 400 students have participated in the tour, which has run more than 20 times, by School of Languages and Linguistics Lecturer in Japanese, Dr Leigh Kirwan.
Students who complete the Japan Study Tour are not only exposed to a life-changing experience, they are eligible to apply for 10 credit points towards their degree.
Japan Study Tour itinerary overview
There is always something new to do in Japan, so the Japan Study Tour itinerary changes slightly each year to capitalise on the best Japan has to offer. However the tour always provides the perfect mixture of culture, history, nature and fun and generally runs over three to four weeks.
Students can expect everything from picturesque mountain towns and breath-taking nature walks to authentic homestay experiences and the hustle and bustle of Japan’s larger cities like Tokyo.
A typical day on the tour will include a walking tour element in the morning and an afternoon activity with some free time to explore in between.
- trekking on a remote island off northern Hokkaido,
- a homestay with students from Rikkyo University in Tokyo,
- relaxing on a pristine beach at Shirahama,
- enjoying hot springs in Kyushu, and
- taking part in Japan’s biggest festival, the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.
- Griffith University students studying Japanese from first year to forth year
- International exchange students
The tour is always exciting, fun and a highlight of the year. There have been many memorable moments, and many former tour students are now living in Japan. Although it’s true the keener students tend to join the tours in the first place, there definitely seems to be a higher correlation of students who participated in one of the tours being successful with a Japanese-based career than those who studied without the tour experience. -- Dr Leigh Kirwan, Japan Tour Convenor.
