With effect from 1 January 2014, candidates are required to report on progress once per candidature year only through completion of either the early candidature milestone, confirmation of candidature, the mid-candidature milestone or the thesis and candidature review milestone (from 2017), or a progress report.
The reporting requirements provide a structured opportunity for candidates and supervisors to discuss performance and progress, identify and resolve any problems, identify if additional resources or other support is required, and to assist candidates to complete their research and writing of their thesis in a timely manner.
The task of monitoring progress is ongoing and should not be confined to the formal reporting requirements. The major responsibility for ongoing monitoring of progress and progress review rests with the candidate's supervisors, Head of Element (or delegated HDR Convenor), and Dean (Research).
Elements and Deans (Research) may introduce additional reporting arrangements for monitoring candidate's progress and may take steps to rectify problems with particular candidates at any time.
Completion of reporting requirements is a condition of continued candidature for all HDR candidates and failure to complete a reporting requirement may lead to termination of candidature. Candidates in receipt of a scholarship may have their stipend payments suspended if they fail to complete a reporting requirement by the due date. Some Masters (Research) programs may be exempt from the requirement to complete one or more reporting requirements. Masters (Research) candidates should consult their Program Director.
Candidates who commenced from 1 January 2017, or were confirmed in their candidature as at 1 January 2017, are required to complete the thesis and candidature review milestone in lieu of the mid-candidature milestone.
Current candidates are encouraged to complete the thesis and candidature review milestone in lieu of the mid-candidature milestone. Candidates who wish to complete the thesis and candidature review milestone in lieu of the mid-candidature milestone are required to advise the Griffith Graduate Research School via email to hdr-milestones to enable their record to be amended accordingly.

Time frames for Reporting
Reporting requirements will be due each year based on the candidate's date of commencement. The timeframes for PhD candidates to complete the reporting requirements are as follows:

Addressing Candidature Issues
The reporting requirements provide a formal means by which any problems concerning candidates can be identified. However, there may be circumstances in which the candidate or supervisor are not inclined to raise problems as part of a formal reporting requirement.
