The Health Group at Griffith University produces world-class professionals in a broad range of health-related professional disciplines and research. The Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards celebrate the outstanding success of our graduates and the important contributions they make to their professions, communities and scientific understanding.

Know an exceptional health alumnus?

Eligibility criteria

All alumni of the Health Group and its predecessor faculties and elements are eligible for these awards and need not be working in the discipline from which they graduated.

Each award recognises an alumnus for their outstanding record of professional excellence and contribution to their chosen industry, discipline area and community.

One winner will be selected in each of the Award categories, excluding the Outstanding Health School Alumnus of the Year Award which will have a total of nine winners, representing the eight Health Group schools and AISRAP.

Further information on the eligibility criteria for each of the Award categories is identified below:

Outstanding Health Alumnus of the Year

The winner of this award will be selected from the winners in each of the Health Group Outstanding Alumni Award categories.

Outstanding Young Health Alumnus of the Year

The nominees for this award will also be 35 years or younger in 2017.

Outstanding International Health Alumnus of the Year

The nominees for this award will have completed their Griffith University degree as an international (non-Australian) student, living now either in Australia or overseas.

Outstanding First Peoples Health Alumnus of the Year

The nominees for this award will also be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Outstanding Higher Degree Research Health Alumnus of the Year

The nominees for this award will have successfully completed one or more of the following degrees at Griffith University:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
  • PhD in Organisational Psychology
  • PhD in Clinical Psychology

Outstanding Health School Alumnus of the Year

The nominees for this award will have completed a Griffith University degree that is affiliated with one of the current or predecessor Health schools and AISRAP.

Selection criteria

Nominators must complete a nomination form for each nominee detailing how the nominee fulfils the selection criteria with supporting documentation where possible. The selection criteria is the same for each of the Award categories.

Alumni can self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague.

Exceptional success in area of chosen discipline/industry/profession

  • Alumni that have attained and maintained high positions in their chosen field or endeavour and in their service to industry.
  • The alumnus demonstrates outstanding professional achievements.

Outstanding contribution to discipline area/industry/profession

  • The efforts and achievements of the alumnus have made a significant impact on their discipline / profession / industry.
  • The alumnus has demonstrated national or international leadership in their discipline / profession / industry.
  • The contribution of the alumnus has shaped understanding/practice in their discipline / profession / industry.

Substantial contribution to the community at the local, state, national or international levels

  • The alumnus has demonstrated substantial involvement in their community that is likely to be an inspiration to the next generation of graduates and the community at large.
  • The activities undertaken by the alumnus are considered innovative and substantially beneficial.
  • The alumnus is a widely respected member of their community and displays outstanding leadership, professional and personal qualities.
  • This contribution may be as part of employment in their chosen profession or may be voluntary or charity work.

Terms and conditions

By nominating an alumnus of the Griffith University Health Group for the Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards, both you and they agree to be bound by the following terms and conditions (these terms and conditions may be amended at any time).

1.0 Interpretation

1.1 The Griffith University Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards

The Awards are an initiative of Griffith University and the Health Group.

1.2 Judges

Nominations for the Outstanding Health School Alumnus of the Year are assessed by a judging panel in each Element that includes at least three (3) senior staff and their decision is final.

Nominations for the Outstanding Health Alumnus of the Year, Outstanding Young Health Alumnus of the Year, Outstanding International Health Alumnus of the Year, Outstanding First Peoples Health Alumnus of the Year, and Outstanding Higher Degree Research Health Alumnus of the Year are assessed by a panel of judges and their decision is final.

The judging panel will comprise:

  • The Pro Vice Chancellor (Health) of Griffith University or their nominee (Chair of the panel)
  • representative from Griffith University Development and Alumni Office
  • Director, International (Health Group)
  • Director, First Peoples Health Unit
  • Health Group Dean (Academic)
  • Health Group Dean (Research)
  • Health Group Dean (Learning and Teaching) or nominees
  • senior representative from Griffith University, outside the Health Group.

1.3 Defined terms

Any terms defined in the nomination guidelines have the same meaning in the Terms and Conditions.

2.0 Nomination

2.1 Method of nomination

To nominate for the Griffith Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards the nominator must:

  • a. Read the Terms and Conditions
  • b. Submit an online nomination form
  • c. Ensure all supporting documentation is submitted with the nomination form:
    • i. Response to selection criteria
    • ii. Nominee’s most current Curriculum Vitae
    • iii. Supporting documentation and information

Nominations remain current for a period of two (2) years, however it is a condition of the Awards that an updated nomination form be provided. Previous winners are not eligible in the category in which they were successful. Nominations will only be accepted on the official nomination form. An email confirmation will be sent to the nominator on submission of the nomination form. All nomination forms and accompanying material are kept strictly confidential and remain the property of the nominator / nominee, and their return can be requested at any time following the conclusion of the award for which they were submitted.

2.2 Correspondence

Any correspondence from the Organising Group to a nominator / nominee will be solely through Griffith Health Deputy Executive Officer

2.3 Changes to nominations

Changes to nominations will not be accepted following the closing date for nominations.

2.4 Withdrawal from the Griffith Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards

A nominee may withdraw from the Alumni Awards at any time, providing that this is undertaken in writing to the Deputy Executive Officer (Health), Griffith University.

2.5 Media exposure

It is a condition of nomination that the nominees who win the awards make themselves available to Griffith University’s Office for Marketing and Communications for media and public relations activities to a level mutually agreed upon. Confidentiality will be maintained.

3. Prizes and decisions

3.1 Alumni Awards

The nominees that are determined by the judges to be the recipients of the Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards, excepting the Outstanding Health School Alumnus of the Year award, will receive their awards at the Health Group Alumni Celebration. Winners of the school awards will be celebrated at individual school-based functions. Winners must be present at the event to accept their awards. Exceptional circumstances will be considered by the Judging Panel.

3.2 Date and notification of decision

The name of the nominees to receive the Health Group Outstanding Alumni Awards will be announced at the Health Group Alumni Celebration. The judging panel reserves the right to contact the recipients in advance of the function to ensure availability and attendance.

3.3 Finality of decision

The decision of the judges is final. No communication will be entered into with any person in relation to any decision of the judges.

3.4 Commendations

At its discretion the judging panel reserves the right to make additional commendations within the scope of the Alumni Awards in the case of an outstanding candidate.

4.0 General

4.1 Change of Terms and Conditions

The Organising Group may change these Terms and Conditions at any time, without specific notice to you. The amended Terms and Conditions will be effective immediately upon being posted on the website for the Award, at Outstanding Health Alumni Awards web page.

4.2 Termination

The Organising Group may at any time and for any reason discontinue the Alumni Awards and associated events by posting a notice to that effect on the website, located at Outstanding Health Alumni Awards web page.

4.3 Situations not covered by these Terms and Conditions

The Organising Group reserves the right to determine any situations not covered by these Terms and Conditions on a case-by-case basis. The decision will be final, and no communication will be entered into in regard to the decision of the Organising Group.
