An exciting opportunity to connect and share ideas with colleagues

The Griffith School of Engineering and Built Environment and SSN College of Engineering present a monthly webinar forum for academics from diverse engineering disciplines to share learning and teaching practices and discuss current trends in a friendly, dynamic environment. Academics, educators, and industry practitioners from different engineering disciplines such as civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical, environmental and project management as well as aviation and architecture are welcome to attend.

We invite speakers from different universities and countries to present on innovative ideas around various topics including student engagement, online learning, approaches to teaching, assessment, inclusiveness... With a focus on engineering and science, our seminars are designed to appeal to broad audiences.

Webinar Details

  • Speaker: Associate Professor Divya John, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering
  • Title: Integrating Thinking Skills with Language Skills in the Engineering Curriculum
  • Abstract: This talk highlights the significance of integrating thinking skills with Language Skills (LSRW - Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) in the engineering curriculum. In the global job market, young aspiring engineering professionals require effective communication and critical thinking. The emphasis is on the importance of thinking skills - both lower order (Remember, Understand, Apply) and higher order (Analyse, Synthesise, Evaluate, and Create) - in enhancing LSRW skills. The primary research question addressed here is: "What are the thinking skills needed to acquire LSRW Skills?" The question serves as the foundation to examine the intricate relationship between thinking skills and language proficiency. The talk also delves into how English language faculty can play a pivotal role in nurturing learners' thinking skills that are essential for effective communication. Furthermore, the talk suggests the techniques that can be employed by engineering faculty to enhance the students’ LSRW skills. The research also offers an analysis of the challenges faced in the acquisition of LSRW skills – such as listening comprehension, effective speaking, critical reading, and proficient writing - and proposes viable solutions. In conclusion, the attempt seeks to enhance the overall quality of engineering education and prepare students for competitive success in a multifaceted world.
  • Date: 25 October 2023
  • Time: 2–3pm (Brisbane, QLD time) or 9.30–10.30am (Indian time)

Webinar objective and organisation

The objective of these webinars is to establish long-term collaborations between Australian and Indian academics in the learning and teaching space which will lead to joint workshops and symposiums as well as collaborations in scholarship of learning and teaching.

Webinars will be recorded and uploaded to the webinar webpage so that they can be freely accessed by a larger audience (see the ‘Past Presenters’ section below).

Webinar strategies

  • Invite leading educators from different countries to share their experience and approaches to teaching
  • Select topics that will be of mutual interest to academics worldwide. Invite presenters from different academic/research institutions to disseminate successful learning and teaching practices to a wider audience
  • Speakers will be awarded with a certificate of presentation while participants may request a certificate of attendance. For the attendance certificate, please contact and provide your name, affiliation, and email address.
