Promoting health and wellbeing through occupation

Occupational therapy staff and students at Griffith University (GriffithOT) engage in research that is designed to have a direct influence on occupational therapy practice and professional issues. The discipline has two areas of research focus and strength:

  • Promoting occupation for health
  • Creating graduates for the future

Promoting occupation for health

Supporting the diverse areas of occupational therapy practice to demonstrate the value of occupation to health and wellbeing is a central aspect of research at GriffithOT. This program of research includes occupational therapy with individuals, groups and communities. Research collaborations with external professional partners ensure that the projects have a strong practice focus and promote direct translation into clinical practice.

Current projects

  • CarFreeMe for people with dementia (collaboration with the University of Queensland)
  • Supporting return to occupations for people with stroke.
  • Occupational outcomes and experiences of people attending a pulmonary rehabilitation program.
  • Occupational engagement of older adults in residential care facilities
  • Older adults’ engagement in out-of-home occupations
  • Assistive technology

Creating practitioners of the future

The primary research aim of this group is to develop a workforce who are responsive to, and prepared for, current and emergent areas of practice. Our research is designed to build the evidence base for approaches that support student occupational therapists and practitioners to integrate theory and practice, including the implementation and evaluation of contemporary curriculum design.

Research topics

  • Occupation-centred education
  • Use of role-emerging practice education models in curriculum
  • Occupational adaptation and professional identity
  • Occupation-centred practice
