Suicide in Queensland: Annual Report 2020

The Suicide in Queensland Annual Report 2020 (Suicide in Queensland) provides recent suicide trends in Queensland to help target and inform suicide prevention activities in Queensland by understanding the circumstances in which suicides occurred. This report includes information from 1990 to July 2020. The information comes from a public health surveillance system — the Queensland Suicide Register (QSR) and the interim Queensland Suicide Register (iQSR).

Notice of correction on 18/11/2020: On page 25 of the PDF, the number of suspected suicides for males in Brisbane North PHN was 340. The correct number was 304. The PDF has been corrected in all locations it appears online.

The maps below contain information on suspected suicides from 2017 to 2019. There are maps for Hospital and Health Service catchment areas, Primary Health Networks, and remoteness areas in Queensland. Information includes numbers of suspected suicides and age-standardised suspected suicide rates per 100,000 persons.

Regional datasheets

The datasheets below contain information on deaths by suicide from 2013 to 2019 in the 15 regions covered by Queensland Health's Hospital and Health Service catchment areas (view information about these catchment areas at https://www.health.qld.gov.au/system-governance/health-system/hhs). Information includes the percentages of those dying by suicide by age and gender. There is also information on what percentage of people reportedly had a mental health condition or had experienced an adverse life event prior to their death.
