About Joy

Dr Joy Parkinson is Research Director for Social Marketing @ Griffith. Driven by a desire to see people living their best life, Joy works with experts from multiple disciplines including nursing, public health, dietetics, pharmacy, and exercise physiology to design, implement and evaluate transdisciplinary behaviour change programs that have real social impact. Joy’s research, (100+ peer reviewed publications) is improving peoples’ lives across Australia and internationally.

Joy is committed to:

  1. Building a strong evidence base using systems thinking of effective behaviour change strategies and approaches
  2. Building capacity of social marketers and social behaviour change agents
  3. Developing a strong multidisciplinary team to build a transdisciplinary approach to behaviour change to improve the wellbeing of people and the planet

Her Current Projects

My Health for LifeHealth for My Heart

My Health for Life

Joy is currently leading the evaluation of My Health for Life. This project aims to health check 200, 000 Queenslanders and complete 10,000 Queenslanders over a three-year-period, in a lifestyle behaviour change program, which aims to reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases. As an extension to this project, Joy is also leading an environmental audit to understand the food, physical activity and service environmental barriers and drivers to support or inhibit Queenslanders to live a healthy life.

My Health for LifeWestern QLD Primary Health Network

Change 2

Change 2, in partnership with Western Qld Primary Health Network, Joy is working on piloting this secondary diabetes type 2 prevention group based, lifestyle modification program, developed specifically for rural, regional and remote Queenslanders with Type 2 Diabetes.

My Health for LifeR.E.M.I (Robotic Empathy Machine Intelligence)

R.E.M.I (Robotic Empathy Machine Intelligence)

This innovative program combines augmented reality with gamification to teach empathy to young people. In partnership with Activate Entertainment, the team assesses the effectiveness of R.E.M.I by embedding a questionnaire into an augmented reality experience.
