Stephen McCarthy is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Relations, Griffith University. He has served as a visiting fellow at the East-West Center, the Royal University of Phnom Penh, and graduate faculty scholar at Northern Illinois University.
His research areas include Southeast Asian politics, political economy and rule of law; democracy and governance in Asia; politics and political rhetoric in Myanmar; and the political economy of environmental governance. He has taught and published widely on these topics and is the author of The Political Theory of Tyranny in Singapore and Burma (Routledge, 2006) and co-editor of Governance and Democracy in the Asia-Pacific: Political and Civil Society (Routledge, 2020).
