The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (GC2018) 4-15th April is fast approaching!
GC2018 will be the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade and the biggest sporting spectacular the Gold Coast has ever seen, attracting both national and international focus. It is expected that over 1 billion people will watch the games on TV with millions more watching events live from every venue through mobile applications.
In recent years, similar high profile events have experienced a range of targeted cyber-attacks and Griffith University has undertaken a program of works to mitigate key identified threats.
Everyone has a role to play in cyber security - thanks for following our tips and helping keep Griffith University cyber safe:
- Be on heightened alert leading up to, during and after the event (4-15th April)
- In the event of mobile network congestion, staff should use land lines or text messages instead of mobile voice as appropriate
- For on campus Wi-Fi access, only use the official trusted Griffith University Wi-Fi (avoid accepting other Wi-Fi certificates or using other advertised Wi-Fi networks on campus which may appear to look like they belong to Griffith University)
- Emails seemingly related to GC2018 may contain malicious web links or attachments - this is a predominant attack method used by cyber criminals
- Watch out for scams selling tickets to the games – read the cyber alerts section
- Always use strong passwords (hard to guess easy to remember such as passphrases)
- Make sure software on all devices is kept updated
- Be aware of social engineering attempts for unauthorised personnel to gain entry into buildings or requesting information via telephone or email
- Business Email Compromise (BEC) scams request urgent payment of invoices or advise on change of payment details (these can be forged so they appear to be sent from senior staff in the university or from contractors/third parties)
- Take care of physical devices (mobiles, laptops etc.) both on campus and during transit
- Report any observed cyber security activity to the IT Service Centre
