Assessing Crime Harms

Police are increasingly tasked with responding to a wide range of social problems, in addition to traditional property and violent crimes. These new tasks range from countering violent extremism, responding to systematic child abuse, corruption in sport and betting, and addressing domestic violence. Many new policing responsibilities have been created without any or sufficient increase in resources, so police must make judgements on how to prioritise competing requirements. This project aims to provide guidelines for this task, by establishing the seriousness of harms caused by a wide range of offences. It will do so by synthesising community, police and other justice professionals’ views of crime harms, to develop a crime harm index.
