Assistance to help drive your research study

The Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security offers a number of support programs to our PhD, honours and undergraduate students in order to provide a supportive and productive research environment. We also offer incentives to assist with research development and collaborative opportunities.

Conference Support Scheme

We acknowledge the importance of establishing and developing external relationships, collaborative opportunities and promoting research at conferences and similar events. The Conference Support Scheme offers financial support to members when representing the Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security at national and international conferences, workshops or symposiums.

Target group: Full members and research candidates.

Award: up to $500 conditions apply and annual cap applies to the availability of these funds.

Application closing date: there is no set closing date. Eligible applications will be accepted at any time.

Scott Piper Award for Best Student Paper

The Scott Piper Award for Best Student Paper is in memory of Dr Scott Piper and recognises the best student publication from the previous year. We are proud of the research our candidates produce each year and use this support program to recognise their achievements.

Target group: Research candidates.

Award: the winner will receive $500 and a keepsake trophy. A maximum of two runners-up will each receive $100 and a keepsake trophy.

Application closing date: nominations will open each year (date to be advised).

Postgraduate Publication Scheme

We understand the effort, dedication and time involved in publishing papers of a high standard, and offer this award to recognise the work of our research candidates.

Target group: Research candidates.

Award: either $400, $200 or $150 depending on the journal the paper was published in.

Application closing date: there is no set closing date; eligible applications will be accepted at any time. Applicants can apply for one award per paper published.

Honours Thesis Write-Up Scholarship

We offer support to recently completed honours students that are being supervised by full or associate CPHFS members to encourage and assist them in writing and publishing a paper from their honours thesis.  The scholarship typically runs over a four-week period and the outcome should be a submission of at least one paper to a journal.

Target group: Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security student members who have completed their honours.

Award: up to $2,000 (with a maximum of $1,000 provided by the supervisor and matching funds from the Centre). The award may be extended by the supervisor (at the expense of the supervisor).

Application closing date: there are two application and offer rounds each year, with applications to be received by 5.00pm on 15 July and 1 December.

Summer Studentships

Summer studentships are offered each year, giving undergraduate students the opportunity to work with researchers on specific projects that enhance their existing research activities. The studentship typically runs for eight weeks over the summer university break, as well as a mid-year round. Discuss with your supervisor which would be suitable for you.

Target group: undergraduate students and those applying for their honours.

Award: up to $2,800 (with a maximum of $1,400 provided by the supervisor and matching funds from the Centre). The award may be extended by the supervisor (at the expense of the supervisor).

Application closing date: We have mid-year and Summer Semester offers. Applications must be received by 5.00 pm on 15 July and 1 December each year. No applications will be accepted after these dates and the applications must be complete.
