Design Director, Alibaba and Executive Vice President, Lazada
How data, machine learning and complexity of mixed model interface shape designer’s thinking and what we should prepare
Alibaba, one of the world’s largest e-commerce platform, owns lots of user behaviours data, business logics and operational knowledge. It puts data analysis and machine learning into real practice. This keynote will cover how Alibaba designers develop a framework that works with data to analyse user behaviours and deliver design solutions. In addition, with business models and data built up, this keynote will share stories about leveraging machine learning and image recognition technology to create two machine design assistants to help sellers on content generation. Along with maturity of hardware technology and cloud computing, designers in Alibaba start facing the challenges and thinking the future form of new interfaces. The keynote will introduce five principles on designing mixed model and intelligent interface such as voice interface and humanity enhanced interface and how Alibaba designers enliven them to become close to what or whom users can expect.
Sean Chiu is currently Design Director of Alibaba and Executive Vice President and Head of UX Design at Lazada, bringing the Alibaba e-commerce design experience to South East Asia and conducting various user researches on glocalisation design with cross-border projects. Before he was appointed to the role, he has been contributing his expertise in user research, creative design, service design and product design in leading many design projects in different business units inside the Alibaba Group. He was Product Design Director of Alibaba Music and Live Entertainment Group. His team has won a 2018 Good Design Award for content design, and through adapting new design methods and technology innovations, his team was able to accelerate service experience upgrade in live entertainment industry in China. Before joining Alibaba, he was Usability Design Lead in Acer Inc. utilising design thinking to innovate the next generation products and running design engineering to help improve hardware and software quality and user experience for product lines. Sean’s role has always served as not only a designer but also a product owner in the company. His unique working philosophy and design practice approach have always brought his design teams stronger voices and more influence in organisations.
