Gala Dinner and Awards Night
Friday 4 November 2016 Sofitel Brisbane CentralOn Friday 4 November Griffith Business School celebrated the 11th Annual Alumni Gala Dinner and Awards Night. 370 alumni, friends, industry partners, staff and current students joined us and major event sponsor AMP at the Sofitel Brisbane to acknowledge the remarkable achievements of our graduates and honour the 2016 Outstanding Alumnus Award winners.
The dinner provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the achievements of our outstanding graduates via the Outstanding Alumnus Awards and the introduction of inaugural recipient of the QBM-Griffith MBA Responsible Leadership scholarship, James Pearce, Senior Associate at Populous.
A highlight of the evening was an ‘in-conversation’ with Griffith MBA alumnus Susan Rallings, Senior Vice President, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management who shared her personal journey while also reflecting on her time as being part the very first MBA cohort and how connections made during this time have impacted on her career.
Professor Paul Simshauser was announced as the 2016 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.
Paul Simshauser graduated from Griffith with a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Commerce. He was the former Chief Economist at AGL Energy and was the only Executive of an ASX-listed company in Australia to hold simultaneous roles of a full-time executive and a Professor of Economics at Griffith University. He now serves the Queensland Government as the Director-General of the Department of Energy and Water Supply.
His research and commitment to Energy Policy is highly regarded and he has 35 internationally published articles. In the mid-1990s he and a colleague developed a one-day ‘energy market simulation training course’ and since 2004 almost $500,000 has been raised and donated to charities including The Starlight Foundation and Autism Spectrum Australia.
Olivia Loadwick was announced as the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year. Olivia graduated from Griffith with a Bachelor of International Business. She is now an Associate Partner at McKinsey and Company and is a nationally and internationally recognised corporate finance and corporate strategy specialist. She has been recognised in the Westpac/Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence Awards, and was also a representative at the B20 Leaders Summit.
Olivia co-founded The Glass Elevator, an initiative designed to increase the number of women in senior executive positions in Australia. She is also a Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Global Sisters, a not-for-profit organisation helping women to become financially independent through sustainable self-employment.
The inaugural winner of the Outstanding International Alumnus of the Year is Dr William Chen. William graduated from Griffith with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting. He has more than 20 years’ financial management experience with local and global high-growth companies in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods and retailing sectors, with operations in the Greater China and Asia Pacific region. William is currently Group Chief Financial Officer and General Manager for Hui Lau Shan Group, a dessert chain with more than 250 stores in Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China and Malaysia. He also serves on the Industry Advisory Committee for Griffith University’s Bachelor of Business program in Hong Kong.
The dinner provided members of our alumni community the opportunity to contribute to the Transforming Business Appeal through the purchase of raffle tickets. The Transforming Business Appeal supports the University-wide Student Futures Fund. The Fund was established to support students experiencing difficult personal circumstances to enable them to access a university education and graduate successfully. Donations to this Fund enable Griffith to provide scholarships for Business School students in need of support.
This year we raised over $1200 for the appeal. We are grateful for the support of our event and raffle prize sponsors:
