Griffith Asia Business Internships offer motivated students nearing completion of their degree the opportunity to increase employability by gaining practical exposure to a professional environment in an international setting. It further enables students to complete a full-time, unpaid 6-week internship while gaining exposure to the diversity and dynamism of Asia by developing cultural, political, and economic understanding and awareness.

Destinations offered in 2024 will include Japan, Korea and Malaysia.

* Please note - All programs will be reviewed prior to delivery in relation to travel advisories and student health and safety, and may not proceed In-Country if the University is not confident of both or cannot provide comprehensive insurance coverage. Remote/Online Global Internships will still be available.

Global Ambassadors share how undertaking a Global Mobility Business Internship facilitates both personal and professional development.

Selection process

Students will meet specific course prerequisites and a criteria-based selection process will be undertaken and include:

  • At the end of Trimester 2, completion of 160CP in an undergraduate or halfway through a postgraduate degree.
  • Achieving a minimum overall GPA of 4.5.
  • Successfully engaging in an interview with staff/academic members of Griffith Asia Institute and potential host organisation.

The course

Prior to commencing the Global Internship, students will participate in an ‘Asia Ready’ program and attend a range of orientation sessions, activities and events.  This includes professional development and introductory culture, education, history, language and politics sessions and industry briefings.

The 20CP elective course is available to select undergraduate and postgraduate students during Trimester 3.

The workplace

Across destinations, host organisation examples include ANZ, Australian Chamber of Commerce, Crossroads Foundation, Fred Hollows Foundation, Global Sky Education, Lipman Karas, Mayer Brown, Ovolo Group, Royale International Group, Steelcase and Trade and Investment Queensland.

As well as gaining valuable exposure to a professional environment, Global Interns have completed the following types of projects and tasks:

  • Draft newsletters, industry reports and other publications
  • Event and project management
  • Develop marketing and human resource strategies
  • Risk reporting and auditing
  • Research and data analysis with regard to consumer behaviour, contract logistics, e-commerce, international trade, investor relations and product development
  • Website and social media management and creative content

Fees and expenses

There are a range of expenses that you will need to be mindful of when budgeting for your Global Internship. These include, but are not limited to:

  • 20CP Griffith tuition fee
  • dependent upon destination, additional third-party provider fee
  • visa application fee, including travel to another city for an interview if necessary
  • vaccinations, if relevant
  • accommodation
  • international flights and in-country transport
  • daily living expenses, including food and communications
  • discretionary spending money
  • independent travel

Funding assistance

New Colombo Plan funding of up to $5,000 per eligible Australian undergraduate student is available.  This is a grant and is not re-paid.

Eligible Australian students can apply for an OS-HELP loan of up to $9,504 (if studying in Asia).  OS-HELP is a loan scheme provided by the Australian Government specifically to support global mobility experiences. It is not considered a grant, therefore approved students can receive this loan as well as a grant such as New Colombo Plan.

International Experience Incentive Scheme (IEIS) Grants of $800 may be available for eligible international students and domestic Master students.

Throughout my six-week internship experience, I achieved more professional and personal growth than I could have imagined. Being in a country where I had little knowledge or expectations allowed me to flourish.
