Photographic Art Practice

Photographic Art Practice and Creative Advertising majors

I wanted to ask a question: what counts as a self-portrait? Here are seven different individuals, all with separate lives and backgrounds from each other. They are all completely different people from each other posing for photos where they are truly expressing themselves. But the person posing in each photo is me. So, are these self-portraits if it’s not me being presented in these photos?

Isobelle Teljega

Within the series Clearing the Dinner Table Isobelle Teljega explores the constructs of femininity and the body in translation. Her work aims to bring together the artist’s body and objects of the domestic to explore issues of gender, sexuality and identity. These repulsive and alluring cocoon forms aim to create a space of transformation and mutation that confronts viewers with their own bodies.

Jemma Thomas

Reconfiguring Memory questions how archival photography preserves, distorts and provokes memory. Each image is reconstructed as a faux polaroid highlighting the shift from analogue to digital, and its subsequent effect on memory. While the archival images are intended to be well circulated, they are reflective of the artists’ upbringing and accordingly depict a westernised colonial perspective.

Tess Mulcahy

Despite significant strides in governance for gender fluidity, even a cursory look at social media evidences vicious responses to any sign of male femininity. Makeup has been used by men throughout history as a sign of male power, up until the 1800s. This project aims to educate and challenge attitudes towards the characteristics of masculinity which drives acceptance leading to increased esteem.
