Divya Dayal

I am a graduate Industrial Designer, passionate about improving products and systems within the field of healthcare.

I was a Sir Samuel Griffith Scholarship recipient in 2017 and I have been a member of the Griffith Honours College from 2017-2020.

I was very fortunate to spend time overseas in Japan through an elective unit, 2007ENG International Engineering Practice. This course provided an immersive experience in engineering practice, through a focus on one of the most densely populated regions of the world, on the central East Coast of Japan. Through a 10 day field trip to Nagoya and Tokyo, we visited sites including manufacturing, transportation, energy, retail, residential and academic facilities, considering each through the lens of the CDIO process (i.e. Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate), Engineering Stage 1 Competencies and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Whether it be in the touch of wood sanded to a fine polished finish on the arms of the wheelbarrow chair, or the use of neoprene to cushion the mask against a doctors face; all of my designs focus on the user experience. Understanding the user helps guide my design.

These two pieces of work are inspired by nature. The two pieces are manufactured using sustainable eco-plywood from Bunnings and have been laser cut and CNC cut and glued together using PVA wood glue. Both pieces are inspired by a mixture of vintage 70s style furniture and Japanese furniture. These pieces demonstrate how modern technology and craftsmanship can mix to form a one of a kind piece.

Focusing on sustainability; I have designed a light installation from recycled lampshades, toilet paper rolls and biodegradable twine. I have also designed a couture gown from recycled truck curtains, the detailing on the gown was water-jet cut and features a mesmerising, jellyfish like pattern.
