ANZ is proud to be partnering with Griffith University and University of Queensland to provide training, real-world skills and career pathways for Queensland's tech talent of the future.
ANZ Cyber Crime Hackathon
Step into the frontline of cyber crime defense at the inaugural ANZ Cyber Crime Hackathon, developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Griffith University. This two-day immersive event places participants in the heart of a simulated business compromise scenario, tackling a sophisticated redirection scam to help identify the Mastermind.
Day 1 - Investigate the Breach:
Investigate a synthesised business compromise scenario centred around a string of financial irregularities, missing payments, and suspicious network behaviour.
Day 2 - Respond and Recover:
Develop and pitch innovative response strategies to a panel of judges. Think beyond tech, explore business continuity, risk mitigation, and strategic interventions.
Designed to simulate real-world challenges, the hackathon empowers students to strengthen their technical, analytical, and strategic problem-solving skills, while also offering direct engagement with key industry partners.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Day 1: Incident Response and Technical Investigation
Thursday, 23 October 2025
Participants will step into the shoes of a consultancy team engaged by a small but rapidly growing Brisbane-based company who have identified financial reporting inconsistencies and suspicious network activity. Teams will conduct a thorough investigation of the company’s digital environment, which holds central logs, user profiles, and key infrastructure configurations. They’ll be granted access to selected employee workstations and servers to uncover leads in identifying any active scams or breaches, the root causes, and potential Mastermind behind the anomalies.
Day 2: Recovery, Resilience & Solution Development
Friday, 24 October 2025
Shifting from investigation to strategy, Teams will develop and pitch an innovative business continuity strategy, technical mitigation solution and/or crisis response plan to a panel of industry experts. This may include improved incident response procedures, secure invoice verification systems, phishing detection tools, or forensic audit workflows. Solutions should demonstrate both technical feasibility and business relevance. Presentations will be judged on innovation, practicality, and alignment with the observed weaknesses from Day 1’s scenario.
Team Formation
Participation in the Hackathon is in teams of four students. You can register as an individual or as part of a pre-formed team.
If you're forming your own team, we recommend bringing together a diverse mix of skills and backgrounds—ideally with experience across business, IT, and criminology—to tackle the challenges from all angles.
Flying solo? No problem! Individual participants will be asked to share their skills and experience during registration. We'll use this information to create balanced teams that maximise collaboration and learning opportunities.
To enrich the experience further, each team will be joined by an ANZ employee, who will contribute their industry knowledge and provide valuable insights throughout the event.
Prizes and Recognition
The Hackathon isn’t just about solving complex challenges—it’s also about unlocking exciting opportunities.
1st Prize
The winning team will earn the exclusive opportunity to interview for a paid 6-week work placement with ANZ. Two standout team members will be selected to join ANZ and gain hands-on industry experience.
Merchandise & Giveaways
Participants have the opportunity to win merchandise to commemorate the event and celebrate their contribution to cyber security innovation.
Certificate of Participation
Every participant will be awarded a certificate of participation, perfect for showcasing your involvement and skills on your resume or LinkedIn profile.
