Public art mural

N12 Sewell walkway

Created by QCAD student Angelique Millet, the design is inspired by natural hues found on the forest floor—in particular, of our local Toohey Forest. Located outside of the N12 Sewell building, the mural brings a welcome splash of colour to the concreted area.

'Forest Stroll is designed to bring the tranquility of the forest into the space at Nathan campus and to encourage people to use the environment whether they are just passing through or spending time to sit and interact with one another. The colours used are taken directly from nature,' explained Millet in her artwork proposal.

'The shades of brown were taken from the forest floor, creating a rather grounded, earthy feel to the piece. The greens bring a sense of the natural harmony of the forest. Accent colours of yellow, orange and blue come from different flowers throughout the forest to catch and hold the attention of the viewer.'

As part of the Nathan Campus Activation, the Experience Team has collaborated with the Queensland College of Art and Design to facilitate the design and installation of student murals via the elective subject Public Art 1.

Led by Queensland College of Art and Design lecturer, Simon Degroot, the subject aims to prepare students for installation work post-graduation by teaching them through a mix of practical training, developing briefs and artistic ideas. While operating in more complex locations, students are also given the opportunity to acquire necessary licences for heavy equipment such as scissor lifts, setting them up with the qualifications needed to take on similar projects after their studies are complete.

Angelique’s Forest Stroll is the result of Public Art 1, while Public Art 2 is set to bring Nathan campus a new mural in Trimester 2. We are looking forward to seeing what wonderful works the students will continue to create this year.

Thank you to QCAD students Angelique Millett, Mia Gunton, Mikaela Evans, Caitlyn Christie and Jamisyn Chapman for their work installing the mural.
