Steve Curran has over 14 years of teaching experience at the university level, as well as 17 years experience as a professional product designer.  Having been raised in California, Steve was inculcated with activist values that include a passion for environmental and social issues — and a belief that the actions of one person can make a real difference.  Steve both teaches and practises a design process that places a strong emphasis on environmental considerations.  He has first-hand experience in the challenge faced by designers who wish to adopt greener design practices, but must convince their clients to also embrace these values if the designer is to survive in a commercial context.  Steve’s teaching strategy underscores the importance of empathy and well-considered argument when coaxing a client to adopt sustainable practices.  In Steve’s view, the sustainability imperative can only take root when the designer, client and consumer have all made a personal commitment to embracing environmental ideals.  Our future relies on designers’ ability to convince other stakeholders that sustainable choices are our only real options.
