Robert Mercer's achievements as an artist have paralleled his academic career. Recognised as a photo-media artist, Robert's images have been collected by institutions throughout the nation. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Recent investigations into video and digital media have extended his vocabulary and exhibiting formats, with his work screening on the ABC's Art Rage program.

In 2000, Robert founded an artists co-op and design studio collaborating on many private and public projects such as the design and development of a CD-Rom for The Minister's Awards for Excellence in Art (Queensland Education), the exhibition Free Alba, the design and publication of the book OPUREY (Griffith University), and he is currently developing a CD-Rom on language programs in education and health for isolated communities in Central Australia.
