Academy of Creative Industries, Timor-Leste 2011

Akademia Arte No Industria Kriativa Timor-Leste 2011

In July 2011, a number of Queensland College of Art staff visited Timor, as part of an ongoing partnership with the country to showcase and celebrate the work of outstanding creative people – artists, designers, craftspeople, musicians, writers, photographers, film-makers and thinkers – from Timor-Leste and around the world.

The aim of this particular event, and our continuing relationship with Timor, is to further develop Creative Industry in Timor-Leste. The Timorese community will present the best of the nation’s traditional and modern music, art, craft, photography, writing and more. It also gives the community the opportunity to see and experience new and exciting forms of creative production from globally acclaimed artists, designers and musicians. There has been nothing like this ever before in Timor-Leste.

In keeping with the Design Futures philosophy, this showcase event sets out to share with the Timorese people the kinds of things that can be part of a National Academy of Creative Industries in Dili. Establishing this kind of educational institution would deliver many benefits to the nation at large. It would provide young adult Timorese men and women, drawn from all Districts, with opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills to gain creative employment and start new businesses; it would also enhance the ability of existing businesses, as well as advancing the teaching of art and design in the nation’s primary and secondary schools.

Within a few years, this activity would bring into being what is called a ‘creative class’. The people of this class would make a significant contribution to the local economy as leaders of a Timor-Leste based Creative Industry, significantly contributing to the nation’s development.
