Course Outline

This course is designed to introduce students to skills that will enable them to make their own original jewellery.  It is suited to beginners and those with experience who wish to expand their knowledge in this area.

The primary aim of this course is to familiarise students with a range of techniques including basic hand skills, drilling, saw piercing, filing, riveting, soldering, sanding and polishing metal along with more advanced techniques of hydraulic forming of metal, metal etching and the technique of patterning metal using a rolling mill.

Learn techniques and develop skills to create original jewellery and small objects. You will develop design concepts and go on to produce the pieces in metal and other materials as appropriate.

Lectures and demonstrations will cover the following content:

  • The studio workshop environment
  • Tools, equipment and materials (metals and other materials as appropriate)
  • Safety in the studio workshop
  • Tool handling and maintenance
  • Basic studio workshop techniques and procedures
  • Students will have the opportunity to complete two projects, from design conception to construction

Required Materials

Students are advised to budget at least $150 for the purchase of materials. Metals and other materials required will vary depending on individual design concepts and teaching staff can be consulted for advice regarding this. Some basic materials will be provided to get each student started. Studios have all large equipment and tools available for use. There are a limited number of hand tool kits available, but students are requested to bring any hand tools they might already have.
