Course Outline

This course provides an introduction to creating and editing vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator CS5. Illustrator is a powerful program for creating print-ready, scalable logos, illustrations and graphic artwork. Previous experience using a PC or Macintosh is an essential pre-requisite for this course.

Session 1:

  • Slide show of Illustrator's outcomes and uses
  • Introduction to Illustrator CS5 workspace
  • Drawing tools and related features
  • Fills/strokes and effects
  • Layers, grids and guides
  • Colour - modes, palettes and libraries
  • Create multiple and diverse outcomes from a single drawing

Session 2:

  • Setting up your documents correctly Preferences and when to change them Using type in Illustrator Basic rules of typography Character and paragraph parameters Applying effects to type Achieving 3D effects in a 2D application Create complex graphs and pie charts easily

Session 3:

  • Scanning files for Illustrator and other uses
  • Using raster images (photos) in Illustrator
  • Converting raster images to vectors
  • Re-working vector images
  • Filter or effect
  • Understanding unknown tools and using them appropriately

Session 4:

  • File formats - what are they
  • File formats - when and how to use them
  • Saving and exporting files for print/press/screen and www publication
  • Saving and sending Illustrator files appropriately
  • Continue and extend your Illustrator knowledge
  • Q & A time

 

Required Materials

Students are to supply their own 1GB USB memory stick, notebook and pen.
