Programs and courses

We offer the widest range of visual art programs in Australia, on two campuses - in the heart of the cultural precinct at South Bank in Brisbane, and at the dynamic, modern campus set in native bushland on the Gold Coast.

Animation

You will receive a thorough grounding in character animation covering animation skills, production techniques and studio hardware, enhanced by study of perspective and life drawing, scriptwriting, concept development, graphic processes, communication, editing and sound production. You will develop the skills to produce original films from script to screen including character animation (both 2D and 3D), concept development, storyboarding, editing, postproduction and sound recording.

You will also develop the ability to determine the most appropriate animation format for specific projects - traditional drawn animation, computer animation, 3D puppet animation or other experimental media. Your academic studies will be extended by off-campus studio courses, enabling you to gain first-hand experience.

Art history, art theory

In brief, Art Theory courses contextualise and enhance the student???s studio practice. They give students a breadth of knowledge, making them aware of the wider implications of applying their specialised studio expertise. They focus on visual art practice as a vehicle for debate and discourse and improve the student???s scope to reflect critically on his/her own work.

Contemporary arts

You will be well prepared for a dynamic future in industries that demand high professional standards and value creativity and innovative thinking. Your career prospects are broad and growing as organisations continue to recognise the critical importance of the visual aspect of effective communication in the modern world.

Offers you rich opportunities to broaden and improve your employment prospects through cross-study and specialisation in a studio award major. You have the flexibility to undertake a studio award major within this degree and to choose an elective major or specialisation from another area of the degree, or from other schools or faculties - thereby completing a double major degree.

Fine art

The visual artist is a major contributor to the culture of contemporary society, and this exciting and challenging program will place you (as a graduate) at the centre of that vital arena. The program gives you the opportunity to gain experience in contemporary approaches to visual arts. Studies take place in the following areas:

  • print media
  • jewellery and small objects
  • painting
  • sculpture

Indigenous art

It is designed to prepare you (as an Indigenous Australian) for practice as a professional artist. The program is focused on traditional Australian Indigenous art media, styles and forms together with strategies for their viable adaptation within a highly urbanised society. It is planned in accordance with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander principles and philosophies.

Multimedia, interactive entertainment

As a blend of digital technologies and creative arts, this program provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of multimedia design, production, management and evaluation, and focuses on the integration of theory and technology and their practical application by teams for industry projects. You will undertake a project for an external client, giving you the opportunity to develop business and management skills, analyse complex computer-based multimedia system problems, design, implement, install and test a high quality solution and report on the completed work.

Photography

Storytelling is one of the oldest and most respected of human endeavours. What we know of ourselves and others comes through the stories we tell. Visual storytelling allows us to understand aspects of ourselves that cannot be conveyed through other media (e.g. love, hate, anger, desire etc). In this degree you will be introduced to the craft, politics and philosophy of such storytelling.

Screen studies, television and film

It provides a unique hands-on study of professional motion picture and video production. You will develop knowledge and skills in production, direction, camera, sound, lighting, editing, digital composing, scriptwriting and research and also the ability to apply these within cultural and industry frameworks. The program combines studies in various aspects of film, television and digital media production with a thorough grounding in the history, practice and critical analysis of filmmaking.

Visual Media

This will enable you to take advantage of the huge growth in professional creative opportunities nationally and internationally, offering you rich opportunities to broaden and improve your employment prospects through cross-study and specialisation in the areas of digital design, 3-dimensional design, ePhotojournalism, fine art practice and graphic design.
