ART THEORY SPECIAL STUDIES COURSE – QCA 2415
BECOMES STUDY TOUR OF ITALY & SPAIN from JUNE 29 to JULY 21,2009.

On 29 June 2009 a group of five undergraduate students enrolled in the Art Theory Special Studies course QCA 2415, teamed up with students and friends from James Cook University, Townsville to embark on a three week study tour of Italy and Spain. The tour included visits to Rome, Florence, and a one -week stay in Venice to engage with the 2009 Biennale, then onto Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona.

For some students and friends it was the first trip to Europe. For others it was an opportunity to re-visit locations and to study the visual arts in situ. This study tour was an art history and theory course, under the guise of a cultural tour of Italy and Spain. It was an opportunity to meet, socialize and engage with students from James Cook University.

While there were many outcomes of the tour, QCA students were expected to complete a number of projects. Amongst these each student was required to compile visual diaries of their tour. Following are the visual diaries of Anna Carey, Nat Koyama, Renee Paxton, Jacqueline Tunny and Elise Walsh.

Dr Craig Douglas

Dr Douglas thanks Dr Stephen Naylor James Cook University Townsville for assisting in organizing the tour. Hopefully JCU and QCA may team up again in 2011 to visit Europe and the next Venice Biennale.
