Queensland College of Art Graduate, Harrison Saragossi, wins Walkley Award

Everyone at QCA would like to congratulate recent graduate, Harrison Saragossi, on winning a prestigious Walkley Award for his portrayal of Fortitude Valley's notorious nightlife.

Twenty-three year old Harrison said, "I started this series while in my honours year at the Queensland College of Art while Charles Page was my supervisor. It was a great opportunity to be guided by such a well respected photographer and teacher. I also benefited a lot from the help of QCA alumni Mick Richards."

On winning the title of Walkley Young Australian Photographic Journalist of the Year, Harrison comments, "I just really enjoyed being part of the awards, I was really happy to be a finalist and it was amazing to win my category."

This project which was several years in the making, involved Harrison walking the streets of The Valley to document the highs and lows and the drama and stillness of city life. A previous Griffith News Now interview with Harrison, from February 2009 highlights his interest in local nightlife and hints at the cultural connotations of superficiality that are often perceived to exist in the clubbing scene.

Describing the win as "exciting and surprising" Harrison said, "I really enjoyed the awards ceremony; it was great to meet the other finalists and see the interesting and high standard of work on show. It really means a lot to me to have my work regarded so highly."

The Young Walkleys are awarded to journalists aged 26 and under.
