Art work by Bianca Beetson

Studying Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at the Queensland College of Art prepares Indigenous Australians to become professional artists.

You will experience traditional Australian Indigenous culture, art, different kinds of media styles and forms together with strategies and skills that will help you cope with a technological urbanised society.

The Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art degree program began in 1995, and is the first degree in Contemporary Indigenous art taught by Indigenous lecturers for Indigenous students.

Our students from all age levels, diverse areas of Australia, bond together to create a wonderful community that is Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art.

Undergraduate degree programs

The Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art degree program is planned in accordance with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander principles and philosophies. Teaching respects Aboriginal laws concerning the ways in which techniques and images may be used.

You will undertake research into your own family history and traditions. The program incorporates field trips to Indigenous communities and gives attention to contemporary culture and politics.

Year 1, your studies provide a solid foundation in art practice, visual culture, contemporary Australian Indigenous art and the culture and issues it represents.

Years 2 and 3, you continue the integrated, family oriented approach to the study of Australian Indigenous art. You'll undertake socio-cultural critique courses along with studio activities including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and electronic media.

In Year 3, you can undertake a 60 credit point elective major or two 30 credit point specialisations. This gives you the flexibility to choose a studio major within the program or to choose an elective major or specialisations options; the following two specialisations are available:

  • Community Away-from-Base project (30CP)
    - Indigenous Australian Community Art project
    - Indigenous Australian Individual Studio project
  • Indigenous Professional Practice (30CP)
    - Indigenous Commercial project
    - Indigenous Exhibition project
    - Postcolonial Art and Issues

The Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art is offered 3 years full time at the South Bank campus and open only to Australian Indigenous students.
