Commonwealth Copyright

The Commonwealth owns the copyright in a diverse range of works and other subject matter produced under its direction and control. The Commonwealth is generally the owner of copyright where material has been produced by its employees or has been commissioned or first published by the Commonwealth (subject to any written agreement to the contrary). There may be some material where the copyright appears to be owned by the Commonwealth, but where ownership is shared under the terms of a contract.

The Attorney-General's Department operates a service entitled the Commonwealth Copyright Administration which facilitates the granting of permission to reproduce Commonwealth copyright material.

Requests for permission to reproduce Commonwealth of Australia copyright material can be submitted electronically on the copyright request form or via a letter containing the same information. The Commonwealth Copyright Administration liaises with Commonwealth agencies to ensure their interests and objectives are reflected in the permission process. The Commonwealth Copyright Administration also provides general advice on copyright administration matters to those agencies.
