Foundational workshops
As part of the establishment of the Strategic Research Program, the following foundational workshops were run in 2006/07, with a foundational workshop on Energy Security having already been conducted in 2005:
- Democracy and Opposition in the Asia Pacific: led by Prof John Kane and A/Prof Haig Patapan and including scholars from the region.
- Counter Terrorism and Regionalism: led by Prof Wesley in conjunction with Australian Federal Police and DIMIA, to provide an audit of the range of activity in the region and to consider the implications.
- Coping with Pandemics: Governments’ Dilemmas: An examination of the administrative, international and security challenges likely to face governments if a pandemic strikes. The focus is on the big pictures of governments’ administrative capacity, civil rights, international relations.
- International civil servants: perceptions of power and influence – led by Profs Weller and Xu. A workshop that brings together a number of senior civil servants in important IOs and asks them to explore their ability to influence government policies – including the WHO, ILO, World Bank, UNDP, WIPO.
