Applied Mathematics

You will inherit a number of valuable skills such as a strong mathematical background, experience in analysing and solving complex problems, and the ability to think logically while studying this major. This study area consists of the development and analysis of mathematical models which arise from the physical, environmental and biological sciences, engineering, finance and technology, as well as the study of mathematical techniques used in this analysis.

Aviation

You will develop the skills and knowledge to prepare you for employment in the field of general aviation, which includes charter work, flight instruction (theory and practical) and other aerial services, such as agricultural spraying, aerial surveying and photography. Your skills will be in demand in many areas of the aviation industry such as management, research and human resource management, and government organisations, such as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

While studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within the Bachelor of Science you will explore the molecular basis of life. It is DNA and RNA, it is genes and proteins, enzymes and metabolism, food and energy, genomics and genetic engineering, proteomics and protein engineering. This major provides graduates with practical experimental and problem-solving skills gained across the broad spectrum of the biosciences to open up a diverse range of career options.

Biology

You will study a broad range of specialist biology subjects, ranging from physiology and biochemistry to whole organism and population biology. You may choose to focus on general biology, whole organism biology or wildlife health. A second major within the Bachelor of Science degree can cover wildlife biology, wildlife health and biology.

Biomedical and Medical Science

This is a challenging program and, as a pre-medical degree, provides most appropriate training for entry to postgraduate medicine. You will develop knowledge and skills in the modern biosciences and clinical sciences, and their application to medicine, biomedical research and health care services.

Biomedical engineering

Biomedical Engineering is the rapidly evolving science of merging sensors, signal processing, communication and information technologies to create innovative solutions to improve or maintain human quality of life. Your studies will focus on medical and biological applications using the latest engineering methods.

Biomolecular Science

While studying this degree you will acquire the expertise and skills required to become a biomolecular research scientist to meet the growing demand for research-ready graduates. You will have the opportunity to follow a career in the pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and other emerging bioindustries; in biomedical and other research institutes; in the applied health sciences; and in university and government research and development organisations such as the CSIRO.

Biotechnology

This program will give you knowledge and skills in the science and business of biotechnology - one of the world's fastest developing industries. Your scientific studies will be integrated with a study of the management, marketing, regulatory affairs and intellectual property issues associated with bioindustry.

Chemistry

Chemistry equips graduates with essential knowledge of molecular systems, their structure, properties, interactive chemical processes as well as profound theoretical understanding of the properties of matter together with expertise in experimental and laboratory skills. This major provides eligibility for RACI accreditation as a registered chemist.

Clinical Science

The study of clinical science provides the basis for entry to a variety of professional vocations in health and allied areas. You will gain specialised knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology of the human body and the scientific techniques relating to the assessment of the functions of the human body in health and disease.

Environmental Science

You will develop skills to enable you to analyse and understand the pressing environmental issues facing our world, and to graduate prepared for a successful environmental career. In your first year alone, you will study a broad range of courses in the biological, physical, and social sciences with an emphasis on the contribution of these fields to understanding environmental problems.

Food Science and Nutrition

The Biomolecular and Biomedical Science Honours Program provides research training for graduate students from the Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Biomolecular Science, Bachelor of Biotechnology, Bachelor of Food Science and Nutrition, and Bachelor of Forensic Science. The degree consists of research training and completion of a research project in the School of Biomolecular and Physical Sciences.

Forensic Science

Griffith University is at the forefront of forensic science education in Queensland and has a national and international reputation for excellence. Griffith academic staff are internationally recognised, with their expertise being demanded for work on projects like the forensic identification of tsunami victims and Australian victims of the Bali bombings, as well as the provision of expert evidence in Australian courts. You will develop your forensic skills in an internationally recognised learning and research environment, where you will acquire in-depth knowledge of new forensic analysis methods and innovations, and gain valuable experience from real-life casework.

Genetic Counselling

This postgraduate program will provide you with access to professional careers in clinical genetics services in medical and public health centres. You will gain knowledge and skills in genetics and counselling at both the theoretical and practical levels.

Medical and Biomedical Science

Medicinal Chemistry

This major provides you with the interdisciplinary skills in the medicinal chemical sciences which can be applied to drug design, development and delivery with an emphasis on the design synthesis, isolation, and characterisation of molecular species with the potential to be effective drugs, medicines and pharmaceuticals.

Microbiology

The Microbiology major provides you with the practical skills and knowledge for the study of micro-organisms and viruses. Microbiology - the study of microbes (algae, protozoa, bacteria and fungi) and viruses - is one of the most important, exciting and career oriented areas in the biosciences.

Photonics and Nanoscience

You will gain the fundamental knowledge, specialised skills and experimental experience to equip you for a variety of challenging careers in the expanding areas of photonics and nanoscience.  Photonics deals with the generation, manipulation, transport and detection of light, and has many applications in the booming communications industry.  Nanoscience is directed at discovering and understanding the way matter behaves at the nanoscale and underpins the technology of creating materials, devices and systems through the control of matter at the atomic level.

Physics

You will develop the ideas and techniques of physics and focus on the fundamental properties of the universe and the laws governing the behaviour of events in the universe. You will have the opportunity to enter a wide range of careers in government and semi-government research organisations, universities, teaching, private industry in both research and development and technical sales.

Physiology

You will require an understanding of physiological and pathophysiological processes that form the basis of clinical measurements of a physical nature. You will also develop an insight into the instrumentation and techniques required to obtain these measurements and an appreciation of good clinical practice.

Science

You will be able to develop specialised skills and practical knowledge for a variety of rewarding professional and research careers in the biological, chemical and physical, environmental and mathematical sciences. You can choose specific majors, or study a general mix of science, depending on your career and professional goals.

Science, Technology and Society

This major provides students with interdisciplinary studies of the historical, social, economic, political and philosophical dimensions of science and technology, including such areas as history, philosophy and sociology of science, political economy of technology, social control of biomedical advances, Australian science and technology policy, energy and resources policies and science and technology in economic development.
