Bachelor of Photonics and Nanoscience

The Bachelor of Photonics and Nanoscience is a new degree which was offered for the first time in 2002. This is a four year full time program, with an embedded Honours. The degree is designed to produce graduates with the fundamental knowledge, specialised skills and experimental experience for a variety of careers in the burgeoning areas of photonics and nanoscience.

The first year of study includes fundamental studies in physics, chemistry and mathematics, as well as microelectronics courses and an introduction to nanoscience. Second, third and fourth year contain a sequence of courses which will develop knowledge and skills in photonics and nanoscience and related areas. Important courses include:

  • quantum mechanics
  • optics
  • solid state physics
  • lasers and their applications
  • principles of photonics
  • properties of materials at the nanoscale
  • optical communications.

Students will have the opportunity to tailor their studies for applications in the areas of biology, chemistry or electronics. The fourth year of the degree includes embedded Honours year, available to students who have achieved the admission criteria (based on performance in second and third year courses).

Graduates of program will be eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics.
