Professor Berners-Price returned to Griffith in August 2009 from the University of Western Australia where she held the foundation Chair in Biological Chemistry from 2001. After completing her PhD studies at Birkbeck College (University of London), she moved to Australia in 1988 as recipient of the prestigious Royal Society Florey Fellowship, which she held in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Sydney. She joined Griffith in 1990 as Lecturer in Chemistry in the School of Science and then held positions as NHMRC R.D. Wright Fellow (1992-1995), Senior Lecturer (1994-1999) and Associate Professor (2000). On moving to the University of Western Australia she served a four-year term as Head of the Department/Discipline of Chemistry and was Chair of the UWA Academic Promotions Committee from 2007.
Professor Berners-Price is internationally recognised for her work in the field of medicinal inorganic chemistry, which involves the design and mechanism of action of gold and platinum-based anti-cancer agents. She has had continuous funding from national competitive grants from the ARC or NHMRC since 1989, holds three patents and is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed original research articles in top-ranked international journals. She is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, has served on the editorial boards of three international journals, and is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry
