History
The Eskitis Institute began life in 1988 with the establishment of three research centres within Griffith University aiming to undertake early stage drug discovery, neurobiology and cell biology research. It was formally recognised as a University Research Institute in 2003 when the three research centres were amalgamated bringing together researchers with a common interest in the development of therapies using adult stem cells and small molecule therapeutics. The Institute has delivered natural product drug discovery projects in collaboration with industry since 1993.

Staff
The Eskitis Institute has 171 research staff, students, visitors, administrative and support staff (January 2010 data). The Institute's research groups are led Research Members and Research & Teaching Members composed of a senior investigator, Research Fellows, Research Assistants and PhD/Masters/Honours students. the Institute's groups work across the thematic areas of cancer, infectious diseases and neurological diseases.
Students
Eskitis hosts 59 enrolled HDR students, many from outside Australia. Eskitis attracts many overseas visitors to study or work at the Institute. At any one time over a third of students at Eskitis, whether enrolled at Griffith or at another University, are from outside Australia.
Eskitis offers a welcoming and friendly environment for international students. Our international student cohort includes visitors from 13 different countries from Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
