Students who meet the entry requirements are invited to contact Centre staff to discuss Higher Degree Research projects.

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

An applicant for admission as a PhD candidate must hold:

  • a Bachelors degree with first-class Honours or second-class Honours (Division A) or a Masters degree, incorporating a significant research component (eg half an academic year), from a recognised institution; or
a record of research (eg publications in refereed journals); or
  • a qualification granted by a professional or other body deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School, to be of a standard comparable to a Bachelors degree with second-class Honours (Division A).

An applicant for admission as an MPhil candidate must hold

  • a Bachelors degree with first-class Honours, second-class Honours Division A or Division B or a Masters degree, incorporating a significant research component (eg half an academic year), from a recognised institution; or
  • a record of research (eg publications in refereed journals), or a qualification granted by a professional or other body deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School, to be of a standard comparable to a Bachelors degree with second-class Honours (Division B).

English language entry requirements

All Higher Degree Research applicants are expected to have reached an appropriate level of proficiency in English. For International Students, full documentary evidence in support of English language proficiency must be submitted with applications for candidature.

Scholarships

Research scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, based upon previous studies and publication record. In almost all cases, scholarships awardees have achieved First Class Honours, or equivalent. Admission to the degree would still be possible without First Class Honours or equivalent (see Admission requirements above).

International Higher Degree Research applicants need to apply for two types of Scholarships, a Living Allowance scholarship, to cover personal costs of living, and a Tuition Fee scholarship, to cover the fees levied on International students studying in Australia.

International students who meet the entry requirements may still be awarded admission to the degree without a scholarship if they are prepared to provided tuition-fee funding from another source, and are able to support their own living expenses.

Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand Citizens, are entitled to access the Australian Government's Research Training Scheme (RTS).  RTS students are exempt from payment of tuition fees, although in the case of a student undertaking a second higher degree, this exemption is at the University's discretion.

Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand Citizens can apply for Living Allowance Scholarships.

From time to time, individual supervisors may be in a position to provide scholarships outside of the usual scholarship round.

Due dates

The 2012 Mid-Year Round will close on 20 May 2012. The 2012 End-of-Year Round will close around the middle of October 2012, with date to be confirmed.

How to apply for admission and scholarships

Once you have the agreement of a Centre for Quantum Dynamics staff member to supervise your degree, and you meet the entry requirements, you can apply online. The online application service includes both the application for admission to the Higher Research Degree and also application for scholarships to cover tuition fees and scholarships for living allowances.
