Allied Health Clinical Placement Scholarship Scheme
The Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) has been appointed by the Australian Government to administer the Allied Health Clinical Placement Scholarship Scheme (AHCPSS). The scholarship will assist eligible scholars to undertake a clinical placement in a rural or remote Australian community.
The Allied Health Clinical Placement Scholarship Scheme is offered to the following allied health disciplines:
- Indigenous Health (undergraduate only)
- Audiology
- Chiropractic
- Dietetics and Nutrition
- Exercise Physiology
- Occupational Therapy
- Optometry
- Osteopathy
- Radiation Therapy
- Medical Imaging
- Nuclear Medicine Technology
- Podiatry
- Psychology (post graduate only)
- Social Work (AASW approved courses only)
- Speech Pathology
Whilst applications will be considered from all allied health scholars, emphasis will be placed on applicants in their final year of study. Psychology students can apply if they are studying at honours level or postgraduate level.
The scholarship valued up to $12 000 and will contribute to funding for up to six weeks while the scholar is on their clinical placement. Successful scholars will receive funding towards:
- travel to and from the placement location
- accommodation costs; and
- living expenses.
Applications for the 2009 academic year open on 1 September 2008. The 2009 Guidelines, Eligibility Criteria and Application Form will be available on the SARRAH website from this date.

J.B. Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism
The J.B. Fairfax Award for Rural Journalism focuses on encouraging undergraduate or postgraduate students of studies relevant to rural affairs to consider a career in rural journalism upon graduation.
Programs of study include Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Communication, Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication.
The award is available to students applying for, or holding admission to, an undergraduate or postgraduate degree with demonstrable relevance to rural affairs (including, but not limited to, Communications and Media Studies, Agriculture and Agribusiness).
The award is valued at up to $10 000 in the 2009 academic year.
How to apply
Fill in an application form and submit a feature article of up to 1500 words exploring an issue, trend or activity of interest to rural and regional communities. Applications can be completed online.

Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme
The Rural Allied Health Undergraduate Scholarship (RAHUS) Scheme is an Australian Government initiative to support rural origin individuals to undertake allied health and oral health degrees so they may pursue a clinical career in rural and remote Australia.
The RAHUS Scheme is open to individuals with a rural background studying an allied health degree (audiology, chiropractic, dietetics, exercise physiology, indigenous health [tertiary degree only], occupational therapy, optometry, osteopathy, medical radiation science [medical imaging, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine technology] physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology [postgraduate], social work and speech pathology) or oral health degree [dentistry and oral health]).
The scholarship provides $10 000 a year to assist students with accommodation, living and travel expenses during their studies. Eligible students will have lived in a rural or remote region of Australia for at least five consecutive or eight cumulative years and must be Australian citizens or permanent Australian residents. Applicants must be entering or currently enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited or approved undergraduate or graduate entry level Australian allied health or oral health degree.
RAHUS is offered to the following allied health disciplines:

Vision Australia Further Education Bursary
Each year Vision Australia awards financial bursaries to tertiary students who are blind or have low vision for the purchase of adaptive technology such as CCTVs, laptops and screen reading software. Such technology enables easier access to course materials. Bursaries of up to $8000 are available.
Vision Australias Further Education Bursary aims to assist clients who would not otherwise be able to afford adaptive technology, thus increasing their ability to participate in further education.
Since 1996, almost 150 bursaries have been awarded by Vision Australia to students studying a broad range of disciplines from Natural Medicine to Music and Business.
Eligibility criteria
These bursaries are only for people with a vision impairment. To be eligible, applicants need to:
- be a resident of Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, the Northern Territory or Tasmania
- be (or become) a client of Vision Australia
- demonstrate the need for financial assistance to purchase adaptive technology
- be applying for, or enrolled in, a tertiary course graded Certificate IV or above (this includes Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma at TAFE and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at University and is open to Mature Age entry as well as school leavers.)
- be applying for, or enrolled to study at an institution in Victoria, ACT, NSW, Queensland, the Northern Territory or Tasmania
- be available to attend a presentation ceremony during their first semester.
How to apply
To apply for a bursary, applicants need to:
- Have an adaptive technology assessment with a Vision Australia consultant (contact Vision Australia to arrange).
- Download and complete an application form.
- Provide some documentary evidence (outlined on the application form).
Closing date
Applications must be submitted by 10 November 2008. Recipients are selected in December and the Adaptive Technology presented by April and there are award ceremonies in May.

Vision Australia
Neville Bonner Memorial Scholarship
In memory of the late Mr Neville Bonner, the first Indigenous Member of Federal Parliament for Honours in Political Science. This prestigious scholarship is for an Indigenous Australian to study Honours at any Australian university in Political Science or related subjects. The scholarship is equivalent in value to the Australian Postgraduate Award plus HECS.

Central Queensland Health Service District Physiotherapy Scholarship Scheme
Rockhampton Hospital, Central Queensland Health Service District, is offering Final Year Physiotherapy Students scholarships of $15 000 to each successful student. The successful applicants will be bonded and employed for two years at Rockhampton Hospital, Central Queensland Health Service District.

The Department of Education, Training and The Arts (DETA) offers scholarships valued at $7500 to allied health students in the final year of physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech-language pathology courses.

Indigenous Peoples' Medical Scholarship Trust Fund
For the assistance and encouragement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders studying for a medical degree at an Australian University.

Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme
The Puggy Hunter Memorial Scholarship Scheme is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, and administered by Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA).
Scholarships will be available for the start of the 2009 academic year and are worth up to $7500 per year for part-time study and up $15 000 per year for full-time study.
