In 2006, Griffith led the national environmental research community by establishing the Climate Change Response Program, focusing specifically on the information needed to help governments, businesses and communities adapt to the physical impacts of climate change.

Griffith’s leadership in climate change adaptation research was recognised in 2007 when it won the right to host the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility funded by the Federal Government.

The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility is establishing eight strategic research networks in collaboration with the research community nationwide to develop and implement adaptation research plans in priority sectors.

The NCCARF's new Director, Professor Jean Palutikof, managed the five-year preparation of the report Climate Change 2007: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability while working for the Nobel Peace Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change working group in the UK. The appoinment will greatly enhance climate change and environmental research capabilities in Australia.
