Professional leadership

Text books

Sole author of eight text books in the field of Drama Education, three of them in multiple editions. Living Drama 3rd edition has been the standard text in schools across Australia for Senior Secondary Drama and Theatre Studies for more than decade. It is extensively used in teacher training in universities both here and in the UK, Scandinavia and Canada.

PASS
The development of the PASS peer and self assessment system began with a national teaching grant to Professor John O'Toole, and has culminated in being established on learning@griffith across a range of courses, and being a finalist, with the GATT system developed by Mark Freakley, in the Assessment category of the Australian Awards for University Teaching in 2005. In 2008 the system has been further developed and extended to become the SAGE Student and Group Evaluation tool.

Professional practice in teaching

I have been continuously involved in leadership roles in the development and enhancement of professional practice of trainee teachers in the faculty of Education. My roles have included:

  • Associate Dean of Professional Practice (1996 - 1998)
  • Director, Professional Practice Unit (1999 - 2001)
  • Chair, Professional Practice Advisory Committee Convenor (1998 - 2004)
  • Convenor 4238VTA Professional Practice in Teaching 3. - The final practice articulated course for all Secondary teacher trainees (1998 - 2008)

Industry experience

I have written plays for the theatre in both the UK and Australia and worked professionally as a theatre director in both countries. Throughout my working life I maintained my involvement with the theatre industry both as a playwright and director whilst pursuing my teaching and academic careers.

  • Millennium - staged by Shoestring Theatre Company at the Eltham Performing Arts Centre (1993).
  • Above Your Station - commissioned for  the Next Wave Festival. Melbourne and staged at the Eltham Performing Arts Centre (1990)
  • The House - staged by Magus Theatre at the Collingwood Community Theatre, Melbourne (1979).
  • American Wry - commissioned by the UK Arts Council and staged in the opening season at Theatre Clwyd in Wales (1976).
